epresentatives fur<strong>the</strong>r enrich <strong>the</strong>mselves. Second, what truths<br />
can ever be politically constructed if one doesn't control powerful<br />
media Lobbies and capitalist f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g campaigns are extremely<br />
effective <strong>in</strong> shepherd<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>the</strong> political castes that<br />
dom<strong>in</strong>ate us. The symbolic overdeterm<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dom<strong>in</strong>ant<br />
media always conta<strong>in</strong>s—and <strong>of</strong>ten blocks—<strong>the</strong> social<br />
developments <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent struggles, popular alliances, and<br />
<strong>the</strong> dialectic between movements and governments. In short, <strong>the</strong><br />
dom<strong>in</strong>ant media create obstacles to every emergent form <strong>of</strong><br />
democratic participation. Third, <strong>the</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> securitized is<br />
produced <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>sidious and lurid way by <strong>the</strong> scare tactics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
dom<strong>in</strong>ant media. Watch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g news is enough to make<br />
you afraid to go outside: reports <strong>of</strong> children kidnapped from<br />
supermarket isles, terrorist bomb<strong>in</strong>g plots, psycho-killers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
neighborhood, and more. The associative nature <strong>of</strong> social<br />
relations is transformed <strong>in</strong>to a fearful isolation. Homo hom<strong>in</strong>i<br />

perpetually present, and fanaticism and violence constantly<br />
generate, <strong>of</strong>ten for a fee, scapegoats and pogroms aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
m<strong>in</strong>orities and alternative ideas. Through <strong>the</strong> processes <strong>of</strong><br />
representation, politics dumps this world <strong>of</strong> filth on <strong>the</strong><br />
represented.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> modern bourgeois society <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> twentieth century',<br />
<strong>the</strong> citizen, as well as <strong>the</strong> exploited and <strong>the</strong> alienated (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>ed work<strong>in</strong>g class), still had some avenues for political<br />
action through <strong>the</strong> (<strong>of</strong>ten corporatist) <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state<br />
and civil society. Participation <strong>in</strong> trade unions, political parties,<br />
and more generally <strong>the</strong> associations <strong>of</strong> civil society opened some<br />
spaces for political life. For many people <strong>the</strong> nostalgia for those<br />
times is strong but is <strong>of</strong>ten based on hypocritical attachments.<br />
How rapidly have we witnessed <strong>the</strong> wi<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g and ext<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>of</strong><br />
that civil society! Today <strong>the</strong> structures <strong>of</strong> participation are<br />
<strong>in</strong>visible (<strong>of</strong>ten crim<strong>in</strong>al or simply controlled by lobbies, as we<br />
said), and <strong>the</strong> represented acts <strong>in</strong> a society bereft <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>telligence<br />
and manipulated by <strong>the</strong> deafen<strong>in</strong>g imbecility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> media circus,<br />
suffer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> opacity <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation as an absence <strong>of</strong> virtue and<br />
register<strong>in</strong>g only <strong>the</strong> cynical transparency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
wealthy made more vulgar by a lack <strong>of</strong> responsibility.<br />
The represented recognizes <strong>the</strong> collapse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> structures <strong>of</strong>
