<strong>the</strong> commodities that have been denied, but <strong>the</strong> events were also<br />
a symbolic destruction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ways <strong>in</strong> which those commodities<br />
serve as vehicles <strong>of</strong> social subord<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />
We know that some are reluctant to group toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />
orderly occupiers <strong>of</strong> Zuccotti Park and even <strong>the</strong> carnivalesque<br />
alterglobalization protesters with <strong>the</strong> poor and impoverished<br />
rioters' savage jacqueries and violent expressions <strong>of</strong> rage. Don't<br />
th<strong>in</strong>k, though, that some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se struggles are more advanced<br />
and o<strong>the</strong>rs more backward. No, <strong>the</strong> old Bolshevik <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> a<br />
passage <strong>of</strong> political consciousness from spontaneity to<br />
organization no longer has a place here. And let's have no<br />
moraliz<strong>in</strong>g about how <strong>the</strong> rebellions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poor should be better<br />
organized, more constructive, and less violent. On US college<br />
campuses <strong>the</strong> police use pepper spray, w T hereas <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> dark<br />
sections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> metropolis <strong>the</strong>y shoot with live rounds. What is<br />
most important <strong>in</strong> each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se struggles, we th<strong>in</strong>k, is to<br />
understand how <strong>the</strong> powerful refusals, expressed <strong>in</strong> various<br />
ways, are accompanied by processes capable <strong>of</strong> form<strong>in</strong>g new<br />
social bonds. They do not seek to restore an order and <strong>the</strong>y do<br />
not ask for justice or reparations for <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fended, but <strong>the</strong>y want<br />
<strong>in</strong>stead to construct ano<strong>the</strong>r possible world.<br />
Make <strong>the</strong> Truth<br />
When we refuse to be mediatized, we have not only to stop<br />
allow<strong>in</strong>g ourselves to be fooled, believ<strong>in</strong>g everyth<strong>in</strong>g we read <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> papers, and simply digest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> truths we are fed, but also<br />
we need to break our attention away •f from <strong>the</strong> media. It<br />
sometimes seems that we are enthralled to video screens and<br />
can't take our eyes <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong>m. How <strong>of</strong>ten have you seen people<br />
walk<strong>in</strong>g (and even driv<strong>in</strong>g!) on city streets with <strong>the</strong>ir heads down<br />
while text<strong>in</strong>g who <strong>the</strong>n bump <strong>in</strong>to each o<strong>the</strong>r as if hypnotized<br />
Break <strong>the</strong> spell and discover a new way to communicate! It is not<br />
only or even primarily that we need different <strong>in</strong>formation or<br />
different technologies. Yes, we need to discover <strong>the</strong> truth, but<br />
also, and more important, we need to make new truths, which<br />
can be created only by s<strong>in</strong>gularities <strong>in</strong> networks communicat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and be<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
Political projects that focus on provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation,
