NIZHWAASWI GAGIIKWEWINAN: the Seven Sacred Teachings, or Natural Laws:<br />

Gichi-aya’aag, the Old Ones, told us m<strong>an</strong>y strings of life ago that GICHI-MANIDOO, the<br />

Great Mystery, placed the first m<strong>an</strong> on a l<strong>an</strong>d near the borders of a great salt water sea,<br />

which soon would be known as WAABANAKIING, the Dawn L<strong>an</strong>d. It was here that m<strong>an</strong>y<br />

winters later the offspring of first m<strong>an</strong>, the great Anishinaabe Nation, would thrive before<br />

NIIZHWAASWI OMISHOOMISIMAG (Seven Gr<strong>an</strong>dfathers) came out of the Sea <strong>an</strong>d gave<br />

them their Midewiwin belief, established five odoodemag (cl<strong>an</strong>s), <strong>an</strong>d a set of seven laws<br />

to live <strong>by</strong>.<br />

“Seven Gr<strong>an</strong>dfathers” <strong>by</strong> Wikwemikong <strong>Ojibwe</strong> Medicine painter Lel<strong>an</strong>d Bell<br />

<strong>The</strong>se NIZHWAASWI GAGIIKWEWINAN (Seven Sacred Teachings, or Laws) would<br />

become guidelines that, to this day, honor basic virtues intrinsic to MINO-BIMAADIZIN, a<br />

full <strong>an</strong>d healthy life. <strong>The</strong> Seven Gr<strong>an</strong>dfathers told the People to build around these seven<br />

laws the traditional concepts of respect <strong>an</strong>d sharing that eventually would form the<br />

foundation of Anishinaabe-bimaadiziwin, their way of life.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se Teachings, or Gr<strong>an</strong>dfathers, were, in chronological order, as follows:<br />

- Nibwaakaawin (Wisdom)<br />

- Zaagi’idiwin (Love)<br />

- Minaadendamowin (Respect)<br />

- Aakode'ewin (Bravery)<br />

- Gwayako-bimaadiziwin (Honesty)<br />

- Dabaadendiziwin (Humility)<br />

- Debwewin (Truth)<br />
