<strong>The</strong> <strong>Universe</strong> of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Ojibwe</strong> <strong>Anishinaabeg</strong> <strong>by</strong> Zhaaw<strong>an</strong>o Giizhik - 2014<br />

subst<strong>an</strong>ce, a life force, something you don’t have top intuition, <strong>an</strong>d a surrounding<br />

atmosphere.<br />

WAABAN: <strong>The</strong> morning, <strong>an</strong>d the east, called wenji-mooka’<strong>an</strong>g <strong>by</strong> the northeastern<br />

<strong>Ojibwe</strong> <strong>Anishinaabeg</strong>. Patron of youth <strong>an</strong>d knowledge. Formerly under the guid<strong>an</strong>ce of<br />

the Evening Star, <strong>an</strong> elder incorporeal medicine m<strong>an</strong> in the west who embodies wisdom,<br />

he beg<strong>an</strong> a fight with him that neither could win, but which resulted in the everlasting<br />

hum<strong>an</strong> conflict between youth <strong>an</strong>d age, <strong>an</strong>d knowledge <strong>an</strong>d wisdom. Waab<strong>an</strong> is<br />

represented on earth <strong>by</strong> asemaa, the sacred tobacco.<br />

WIIGWAAS: <strong>The</strong> (bark of the) white birch. <strong>The</strong> sacred birch bark forms<br />

wiigwaasabakway<strong>an</strong> (the covering <strong>an</strong>d roofing of houses), shapes c<strong>an</strong>oes <strong>an</strong>d containers,<br />

is used in dyes <strong>an</strong>d medicines, <strong>an</strong>d keeps the magic images the <strong>an</strong>cestors indented, or<br />

drew otherwise. Wiigwaasatig, or Wiigwaasimitig, the white birch tree, is told to have<br />

grown m<strong>an</strong>y string of life ago from the grave of a young hero who died defending his<br />

People, the Serpent River B<strong>an</strong>d of <strong>Ojibwe</strong>g in what is now Northern Ontario; it was also a<br />

birch tree that once served as a safe haven for Wiinabozho, a mischievious aadizooga<strong>an</strong><br />

(supernatural being), against the wrath of the Thunderbirds.<br />

“Thunder Leaf”: a sterling silver ring h<strong>an</strong>dcrafted <strong>by</strong> Woodl<strong>an</strong>d jeweler artist Zhaaw<strong>an</strong>o Giizhik. <strong>The</strong> ring is set<br />

with a Kingm<strong>an</strong> turquoise <strong>an</strong>d a pear-shaped red coral. <strong>The</strong> free-form turquoise stone is accomp<strong>an</strong>ied with a<br />

stylized birch leaf of sterling silver. <strong>The</strong> ring design celebrates the beauty <strong>an</strong>d spirit powers of Wiigwaasaatig,<br />

WIINGASHK, also called mashkosii-wiingashk, wiishkobi-mashkosi, or – in C<strong>an</strong>ada -<br />

bashkode-mashkosi: sweetgrass. <strong>The</strong><br />
