2.4 Population estimates<br />
By combining the mid-2010 population estimates published by the Office for<br />
National Statistics 24 with our measures of the population prevalence of <strong>mental</strong><br />
disorders <strong>and</strong> smoking within diagnostic groups, we have derived estimates of<br />
the number of people with a <strong>mental</strong> disorder in the UK, <strong>and</strong> the numbers that<br />
are smokers. Data (that do not allow for multiple diagnoses in the same person<br />
<strong>and</strong> hence are likely to be slight overestimates) are shown in Table 2.5, which<br />
