<strong>Smoking</strong> among people with <strong>mental</strong> disorders 2<br />
smokers in the UK, 25 have evidence of <strong>mental</strong> disorder, <strong>and</strong> that in up to a<br />
million people, or 10% of all smokers, this <strong>mental</strong> disorder is longst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />
<strong>and</strong>/or currently being treated with a psychoactive medication.<br />
2.5 Variations in smoking prevalence among those with <strong>mental</strong><br />
disorder by age, sex <strong>and</strong> socioeconomic status<br />
HSE data broken down by age, sex <strong>and</strong> Index of Multiple Deprivation score 26<br />
demonstrate that similar differences in smoking prevalence between subgroups<br />
are seen in participants who do <strong>and</strong> do not report a longst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong><br />
condition. <strong>Smoking</strong> prevalence is higher in men, younger adults <strong>and</strong> those in the<br />
more deprived groups (Fig 2.2).<br />

2.6 Strength of addiction<br />
Smokers with <strong>mental</strong> disorders are more heavily addicted to cigarettes than<br />
smokers in general. Among all smokers in the HSE, 5% were classified as heavily<br />
addicted according to the HSI; however, among those who scored 3 or more on<br />
