10 <strong>Towards</strong> <strong>2020</strong> <strong>–</strong> <strong>Photonics</strong> <strong>driv<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>economic</strong> <strong>growth</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Europe</strong><br />
<strong>Photonics</strong> has a critical role<br />
to play <strong>in</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g<br />
key societal challenges.<br />
development through, for example, establishment<br />
of open <strong>in</strong>novation models along the<br />
value cha<strong>in</strong>. This would allow SMEs to operate<br />
with<strong>in</strong> a streaml<strong>in</strong>ed, more market-oriented<br />
set of rules, allow<strong>in</strong>g prototype development<br />
for shorter-term commercialisation, rather than<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g limited only to precompetitive R&D.<br />
n Strengthen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Photonics</strong> Foundations<br />
The actions of the <strong>Photonics</strong> PPP will be accompanied<br />
by measures on education, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and<br />
skills development, as well as standardization,<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational cooperation & outreach. Both <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
and academic partners of the PPP will<br />
undertake these actions to secure the future<br />
work force for this grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
The PPP will work towards the establishment of a<br />
dedicated <strong>Europe</strong>an <strong>in</strong>dustrial <strong>growth</strong> fund, leverag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> photonics <strong>in</strong>novation<br />
through to commercialisation.<br />
<strong>Photonics</strong> for the Societal Challenges<br />
<strong>Photonics</strong> has a critical role to play <strong>in</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g<br />
several key challenges identified by the <strong>Europe</strong><br />
<strong>2020</strong> strategy.<br />
n In healthcare, demographic change & wellbe<strong>in</strong>g<br />
photonics will provide new ways of<br />
detec t<strong>in</strong>g, treat<strong>in</strong>g and even prevent<strong>in</strong>g major<br />
diseases at the earliest possible stage, improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
patient survivability and drastically reduc<strong>in</strong>g care<br />
costs.<br />
All activities will be accompanied by measures to<br />
better attract sufficient capital and management<br />
support for seed<strong>in</strong>g and grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novative bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
ideas.<br />
n In climate action, resource efficiency & raw<br />
materials, new laser-based photonic manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
technologies will stimulate new manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
processes with extraord<strong>in</strong>ary quality<br />
Creat<strong>in</strong>g new bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
