Development of the photonics roadmap<br />
Follow<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Photonics</strong>21 workshops, each<br />
work group chair set up an editorial group that<br />
was responsible for provid<strong>in</strong>g a first draft of the<br />
work group specific roadmap chapter. These draft<br />
chapters were then circulated to the <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />
<strong>Photonics</strong>21 work group members for further<br />
comments and feedback. Additionally, all relevant<br />
materials for the photonics roadmap process<br />
were uploaded onto the members’ area on the<br />
<strong>Photonics</strong>21 website. This area is accessible to all<br />
<strong>Photonics</strong>21 members, thereby ensur<strong>in</strong>g an open<br />
and transparent process for roadmap def<strong>in</strong>ition.<br />
The development of the photonics roadmap drew<br />
extensively on the follow<strong>in</strong>g two <strong>Photonics</strong>21 strategy<br />
documents, each outl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g future <strong>Europe</strong>an<br />
photonics research and <strong>in</strong>novation challenges:<br />
n Light<strong>in</strong>g the way ahead<br />
<strong>–</strong> the Second Strategic Research Agenda<br />
for <strong>Photonics</strong>, (Jan 2010)<br />
n <strong>Photonics</strong> <strong>–</strong> Our Vision for a Key Enabl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Technology of <strong>Europe</strong><br />
<strong>–</strong> the <strong>Photonics</strong>21 Vision Document,<br />
(May 2011).<br />
The <strong>Photonics</strong> Strategic Multiannual Roadmap<br />
builds on these documents to identify research<br />
and <strong>in</strong>novation areas and priorities for the com<strong>in</strong>g<br />
years, and it will serve as the strategic reference<br />
document for the <strong>Photonics</strong> PPP <strong>in</strong> the new<br />
Framework Programme Horizon <strong>2020</strong>.
