Sergeant Julian M. Jones<br />

2009 Doug Russell Award Recipient<br />

Sergeant Jones was born on 19 April 1985 in Boone, Iowa. He graduated from Basic Training at Fort<br />

Jackson, South Carolina in June 2003 and went to the Defense Language Institute (DLI), Monterey,<br />

California. At that time, he was a Signals <strong>Intelligence</strong> Soldier, but during the course <strong>of</strong> his Korean studies,<br />

he switched to MOS 35M, Human <strong>Intelligence</strong> (HUMINT) Collector. After DLI, he came to Fort Huachuca,<br />

Arizona to complete his Advanced Individual Training.<br />

His first duty station was Bravo Company, 524 th MI Battalion, 501 st MI Brigade, Republic <strong>of</strong> Korea. From<br />

December 2005 until June 2006, SGT Jones served as a liaison <strong>of</strong>ficer in the Waegwan MI Detachment.<br />

In 2006, he deployed to Afghanistan in support <strong>of</strong> the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-<br />

Afghanistan (CJSOTF-A).<br />

While in Afghanistan, SGT Jones served as a Tactical HUMINT Team Leader for fifteen months. He conducted<br />

over 40 enemy prisoner <strong>of</strong> war interrogations at a field detention site and was responsible for maintaining<br />

the site, enabling intelligence operations to occur at a remote firebase. The intelligence collected<br />

at this location drove successful operations for CJSOTF-A forces. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal,<br />

the Purple Heart, and the Combat Action Badge for his accomplishments and contributions during this<br />

deployment.<br />

Upon returning from this deployment, SGT Jones was assigned to the Busan MI Detachment, also a<br />

part <strong>of</strong> the 524 th MI Battalion. While assigned to the Busan detachment, he provided language support to<br />

the Force Protection mission and was in charge <strong>of</strong> the Strategic Debriefing mission. From November 2007<br />

until November 2008, he played a major role in the surge operations for Key Resolve and other operations<br />

and exercises.<br />

His dedication to the HUMINT mission, the combination <strong>of</strong> his experience, language, and strategic debriefing<br />

credentials make him a major contributor to the 524 th MI Battalion’s and the U.S. Army’s tactical<br />

and strategic missions.
