Ed Balls was the guest of honour at the event which attracted over 150 party members. The Shadow Chancellor joined Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson and Sefton Council Labour leader Councillor Peter Dowd at the dinner. He told diners: “It is a pleasure to be here in Sefton again.” THE fun hasn’t ended yet. More fun events are set to take place along the Sefton Coast as the Easter holidays continue. Fiona Sunners, from the scheme, said: “The Discovery Days are designed to help residents understand our coastal heritage in an entertaining and fun environment. With the evenings getting lighter, people’s homes can be particularly vulnerable, say police chiefs. Thieves take advantage of insecure properties and gain entry to premises looking for easy access usually via a door or window that is left open. And it’s not just the front of your premises that need to be secured, add officers, unfortunately burglars are not afraid to break in through the back of your house or an upstairs window. To prevent this rise, officers are currently carrying out operations focusing on security around vulnerable premises as well as targeting offenders. Extra hi–visibility patrols are being conducted at key times and days targeting any home which is seen to be insecure or which are in darkness during the evening. Sefton Area Commander, Chief Superintendent, Nikki Holland, said: “We want our residents to feel secure in their homes but we also want to make you aware that unfortunately there are a number of burglars who are prepared to enter homes through open windows and unlocked doors or even by using tools or garden implements to force an entry. “With lighter, warmer nights approaching we are urging residents to continue to consider the message sent out during darker nights by making sure your homes and outbuildings such as sheds and garages are secure and not left vulnerable. “Most cases of domestic burglaries have no forced entry, and the burglar simply walks in through an unlocked door or climbs through an open window. It only takes a few minutes for burglars to sneak into your home and steal your belongings and they will look to identify an easy target.” Police say the community has an important role to play in preventing crime by taking a few extra seconds to check homes are secure, cars are locked and valuables are not left on display. Officers from Merseyside Police are reminding householders of basic security advice which may reduce their chances of becoming victims of crime. These include; if you can, try and leave a light on or use a timer switch during the evening if you are going to be out, do not leave back doors open or unlocked if you are to be upstairs for any length of time as burglars often gain access to people’s property from rear gardens and try not to leave valuable items such as TV and hi–fi systems where thieves can easily see them. Code1049624 MEMBERS of a Crosby badminton club have presented their own award to a Formby grandad in recognition of him getting an MBE in the New Years Honours list for his work in helping those with moderate learning difficulties. Anant Barodekar, recognised the current problems people with learning difficulties are presented with in today’s society. In particular, socialising with other people, especially once they have left school or are too old to have access to the educational SEFTON Central Labour MP, Bill Esterson has met with the head of the Heritage Lottery Fund for the North West, Sara Hilton, to discuss how community groups can win big with the lottery. The MP met with the lottery chief to discuss how groups and parish and town councils in the constituency can tap into Heritage Lottery funding. Mr Esterson said it had been a very productive meeting and he has now asked the regional head to meet with Sefton’s ‘10 Parishes’ parish and town councils. These include; Formby, Lydiate, Thornton, Ince Blundell, Hightown, Little Altcar, Melling, Aintree Village and Maghull. Bill said: “I’d like to thank Sara for coming facilities, available to younger people. Together with other volunteers, Anant and his wife, Ronnie, set up ‘Club 25’ in 1994, with only 12 members. However, today, ‘Club 25’ now boasts over 200 members and provides a fun disco every Monday night at the Birkdale Labour club, as well as many other activities for their members to take part in and enjoy. The members of the badminton club of which Anant has been a member for 10 years, were absolutely delighted when they along to speak to me about the opportunities groups in Sefton Central have in being able to cash in on Heritage Lottery funding. I am delighted she has agreed to meet with the ten parishes to discuss the opportunities with them. There are clearly opportunities for funding for the ten parishes under the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Heritage Lottery can provide funding to help communities sustain and transform heritage sites. This includes parks and historical places, something we have plenty of throughout this constituency. I am more than happy to explore with the ten heard the news about his remarkable award and proudly presented him with a bottle of Champagne and flowers to mark and celebrate the occasion. Dave Bryan, who made this presentation, said: “It is great that someone we know is receiving this outstanding reward. Anant thoroughly deserves it for all his hard work he has put in to get this project off the ground and to keep it going for all these years”. Bill said: “We are very lucky in Sefton Central because we have all of Sefton’s parish and town councils within our boundary. They do a fantastic job in supporting our communities and fighting for the interests of the communities in which they serve.
