Dorothy awarded war
medals – 57 years late!
Report by Jim Sharpe
A MAGHULL grandmother has been
officially honoured for her service in
the Second World War – just 57 years
late!
The 1939–45 War Medal and the
Defence Medal were presented to
94–year–old Dorothy Penn Mayor of
Maghull by Councillor Sandra
Williams and consort Councillor Rita
Knight.
They were awarded for her service as
aWomen’sAuxiliaryAirForcetypist
at RAF Bridgenorth North and RAF
Sealand between 1941 and 1945.
It was while working as a typist that
she met her husband, Ron. He was
shipped out to Burma just nine days
after they got married, so didn’t get to
meet their son Michael until he
returned three years later.
Dorothy said: “It was because I left to
have Michael before the end of the
war that I never received my medals.
“It was a total surprise to get them
now. I am delighted.”
Dorothy later worked in the
telephone room at Littlewoods and
later at Parkfield Motor Auction. The
couple also had a daughter and have
two grandchildren. Her husband died
in 1990.
It was neighbour Stan Thomason
who applied to get Dorothy her
medals. Dorothy said: “I’d like to
thank Stan for going to the effort of
Mayor of Maghull and Consort, Councillors Sandra Williams and Rita
Knight with Dorothy and her son Michael and wife Vivienne.
applying for them. Lots of people
played their part in the war. I was just
atypist–Iwasnothingspecial.
But her son Michael disagrees.
“I think what mum did was great.
Despite her modesty, mum and other
women played an active role in the
war an their efforts deserve to be
recognised.”
The Mayor, Cllr Williams, said
Dorothy was an amazing woman
whose wartime efforts deserved
recognition.
“Very often the role played by
women in the Second World War are
forgotten,” she said. “It is important
to remember what they did and the
M
sacrifices they made. It must have
been very difficult for a young woman
to find that her husband was being
shipped far away from home so
shortly after getting married.
“But then to have a child while your
husband is at war so very far away – it
must have been very difficult.
“So while Dorothy is typically very
modest about her efforts, it is vital
that we remember what she went
through and the debt we all owe her.
We owe our lives to people like
Dorothy.
“It was an honour for me to present
her with the medals she rightly
deserves.
