Secrecy row over
councillor selection
questioning Councillor Caroline Esterson in
Report by Jim Sharpe
public session of the council that it emerged the
interviews had been help in her husband’s
office, but only Labour councillors knew the
MAGHULL’S newest town councillor, Gwen
Kermode, says she is delighted to represent the
towns she loves, as opposition councillors
criticised her selection as “too secretive.”
She was co–opted to fill the vacancy left when
Labour Councillor Kris Brown resigned his seat
and defected to the Lib Dems
Mrs Kermode, wife of sitting councillor Steve
Kermode, was one of three people who applied
after no–one called for a by–election.
Lib Dem opposition councillors have claimed
the selection process was shrouded in secrecy –
place and time.
Lib Dem members only found out on the day
of the interviews but with no information as to
who was being interviewed or where.
He said: “The whole process clearly was fixed
up to ensure that both opposition members and
independent council officers were kept in the
dark.”
Leader of the Town Council, Councillor
Caroline Esterson, said Gwen Kermode would
be a “fantastic addition” to the council.
“We had three excellent candidates come
with interviews being held in the constituency forward for interview and after tough
office of local Labour MP, Bill Esterson. questioning she was the successful candidate.
Opposition leader, Councillor Tony “Having lived in Maghull all her life and with
Robertson, does not dispute that Gwen her involvement in the PTA at her children’s
Kermode would have been selected anyway – schools and her position as a magistrate Gwen
but says such secrecy was not necessary. is already a leading member of this
Cllr Robertson said it was only after community.”
Q. My mother has died leaving her estate between
her three children, but we are not named as executors.
What happens next?
A. Although the estate is due to pass between you and your
siblings, your mother would have been asked at the time she made
her Will who she wanted to entrust with the role of executor and
trustee. Her wish would have been set out within the Will.
If she has not appointed the same people as are the beneficiaries, this could be for a
number of reasons . She may not have wished to burden you with the responsibility, or
wanted to try to keep the administration on a neutral, equal footing, to name a couple.
Whatever your mother’s reason, the person appointed will no doubt wish to honour her
wishes, and it is important the beneficiaries allow the executors to carry out their role as
fully and freely as possible.
As mentioned, there are a lot of responsibilities that go with that role. Anyone acting as
an executor of a Will must be allowed to fulfil these responsibilities to the utmost.
