TALENTED young artists from
Maghull school got to show off
their creations last week when
the results of a tie–up
competition were announced.
Judges from the
Liverpool–based Academy One
scheme visited Deyes High
School to decide the winners of
acompetiontocreateartworks
depicting the region, with
student Ross Bailey impressing
the judges in particular with his
Liverpool–themed creation
depicting both of the city’s
football clubs and the iconic St
John’s Beacon tower.
The competition is part of a
larger tie–up between the
school and Academy One,
which sees the organisation
offer apprenticeship schemes
to Deyes pupils interested in
studying retail as a specialist
subject.
Residents urged
to share race
festival concerns
RESIDENTS in Aintree and Maghull are being
invited to share with police any issues or
concerns they have ahead of the Aintree
Festival.
With more than 150,000 racegoers set to
attend the event from Thursday, April 12 to
Saturday, April 14, the community’s dedicated
neighbourhood police team want to ensure
there is minimal disruption and inconvenience
for residents during the three–day festival.
Despite the huge attendance figures, the
festival has an excellent track record of
deterring crime and anti–social behaviour and
a multi–agency operation involving police
officers from across the force will once again
aim to ensure the 2012 event is safe and
enjoyable for all.
Neighbourhood officers have been speaking
to residents living in some of the busiest streets
around the racecourse to let them know who
they can contact if they experience any
problems with issues such as car parking, litter
and anti–social behaviour during the event.

Inspector Kevin Booth said his officers want to
reassure local residents that they will be on
hand to deal with any concerns they may have.
Inspector Booth said: “The tens of thousands
of visitors we welcome to the area every year in
early April have a great time and we are
grateful to local residents for their patience
and co–operation in helping us to successfully
police the event year on year.
“There will be a large–scale policing
operation to ensure the event passes safely and
my neighbourhood team will also be there to
address any concerns residents have.”

Care village meeting
successful say firm

DEVELOPERS behind plans for a large care
village and dementia unit in Maghull are
claiming that a public consultation on the
proposals on Thursday, April 5 was a success.
Priory Asset Management LLP say the centre
will create hundreds of jobs and provide a
place for people with Alzheimer’s and those in
need of respite.
The proposals had been rejected by Sefton
Council last month, but the developers wanted
to make changes to the application before
re–submitting it.
Speaking about the public consultation
bosses at Priory Asset Management said: “It
was a great success and it enabled those with
concerns to raise their questions to our expert
consultants directly, who in–turn were able to
explain and answer in greater detail thus
suppressing any misinformation which may
have been circulated about the proposed
development.
“Members of the public appreciated detailed
explanations of the technical specifications.
“One of the questions was on the
implementation of SUDS (sustainable urban
drainage systems) and how they would
actually work. For many, the chance to review
asimplifieddiagramatthemeetingwhichwas
explained clearly, helped to clarify how the site
would control the discharge of surface water
runoff.”

But opponents claim
developers have
taken advantage of
new planning rules
Stuart Grundy, added: “We are very grateful to
those people who attended and were willing to
take the time to read and digest the boards and
speak with our consultants.
“I appreciate that there will be some people
who object to the application and I respect
their thoughts on this.
“However, I think it is clear that there has
been some misunderstanding of the
information which has been circulated over the
past months and for some, having had a chance
to speak and meet directly, they have been able
to understand the proposal better.
“While we will not convince everyone of the
merits of the development, it was very
encouraging to see such a large number of
feedback forms supporting the proposal and
acknowledging that it would be a real positive
to Maghull and the wider Sefton region.”
Labour activists who oppose the plans,
together with MP Bill Esterson, have called a
meeting at Maghull Town Hall on Friday, April
13 to start at 7.30pm. They claim the firm have
taken advantage of new planning rules
brought in by the coalition government.

Aintree protest

activists will demonstrate at this weekend’s
Grand National race meeting.
Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe
(FAACE) will target the famous steeplechase
at Aintree Racecourse on Saturday as they
protest against the “high death toll and
injuries to horses” during the three–day
festival (April 12–14).
Tony Moore, chairman of FAACE, said:
“Unfortunately it is to be expected that
horses will come to harm and die in this
year’s Grand National. There is no way you
can make a race like that horse–friendly and
safe. The five deaths that occurred at the
Cheltenham race meeting a few weeks ago
proved this.”
The demo will take place outside the
racecourse and is being organised by FAACE
in co–operation with Animal Aid and local
groups.
Sixth formers in
visit to Parliament
SIXTH formers from Maricourt High School
had the opportunity to walk the Corridors of
Power last week as guests of Sefton Central
MP, Bill Esterson.
The pupils from Maghull were given an
insight into the workings of Parliament and
that of an MP during their visit as they
toured the Houses of Parliament. They also
met Labour’s Shadow Energy Minister
Caroline Flint.
And a select group got to sit in the Public
Gallery during Justice Question Time to
hear Bill Esterson ask a question in the
chamber,
After the visit he said he was delighted to
show the Maricourt sixth formers around.
“It was an absolute pleasure,” he said.
“They clearly were all very interested.”
