Sunbed cancer danger
campaigner to be
Olympic torchbearer

MAGHULL woman Justine Sheils who has
fought cancer and now leads the fight in a
campaign to raise awareness of the dangers
posed by sunbeds, has been selected by Seb
Coe to be an Olympic torchbearer.
Justine will run with the historic torch
through the streets of Knotty Ash on June 1.
The 40–year–old former Maricourt pupil was
nominated for the honour by Cancer Research
UK. She works at Ashworth Hospital and has
become an ambassador for the charity after
battling various forms of cancer and even
survived a tumour in her head.
And she puts the blame firmly on the use of
sunbeds.
“I used then a lot when I was younger – there
were times when I was spending some time
every day on sunbeds,” she said.
“I just didn’t realise the damage I was doing.
“When they found the cancer on my chest the
doctors said it was something they’d expect in
awomaninher80s.Iwasinmymid–thirtiesso
it was a real wake–up call.
“When they found the tumour in my head I
had to have all my hair shaved off, so for a long
time I would only go out at night.
“I went through some very difficult times but
hopefully now I am through it and have been
working to tell as many people as I can what I
went through, what caused it and how they can
avoid it.”
Justine has visited her old school, Maricourt,
on behalf of Cancer Research UK to tell the
pupils of her experiences and the dangers they
face by using sunbeds.
“I have also been involved with Andy
Burnham (the Shadow Health Minister) in a
campaign to bet young people banned from
using them and raise awareness of the dangers
of skin cancer.”
Last year, Justine was named ‘Cancer
Research UK Ambassador of the Year’ for her
work with the charity and next year (2013) will
be starting the ‘Race for Life’ at Aintree.
She said: “I was immensely proud of being
Ambassador of the Year and I’m really proud
to be an Olympic Torch Bearer for Cancer

Research UK. I’ll be going down in the history
books!
“But my main goal is to get people learn the
lessons of my mistakes. Please God, I’ve got
many years ahead of me – and that means lots
of time to raise awareness of skin cancer as
much as possible.”
And she’ll have Sefton Central MP, Bill
Esterson, cheering her on
MP Bill Esterson said Justine had been an
inspiration. “I know from speaking to my
colleague, Andy Burnham, that she has worked
with him to introduce a ban on young people
using sunbeds,” he said.
“I can think of few other people who deserve
to carry the Olympic Torch more than Justine
and I will do all I can to support her excellent
work with Cancer Research UK.”
