IN an entertaining game the
Greens had good early chances,
the Mariners going on to
dominate but managing they left
their shooting boots at home.
Burscough started much the
brighter, and Phil Clarke had
what proved to be Burscough’s
best chance of the game, racing
on to a lofted pass to go clean
through on goal, with Williams
standing up well to block the shot
which lacked any real conviction.
Fowler ghosted late in to the box
to fashion probably the best two
home chances, blasting over the
top on both occasions following
set ups from Nick Rogan and Rey,
after Horn had saved the latter’s
shot once again.
Rey brought another good save
from a very busy Horn, with the
only surprise being at half–time
that the score was 0–0 and not
5–2 to Marine.
The second half was a more
muted affair. Brazilian substitute
Rafael Leal Pezan breathed new
life in to the home attack, and the
best chance came when Barnes
conjured a dangerous cross which
Anthony Glover cleared before
Goulding could pounce.

Mariners held to draw
in blow to play–offs bid

MARINE recorded their 12th
unbeaten away league game on
Saturday, writes Dave McMillan, the
club’s best away run since joining the
NPL.
First half chances were at a
premium, the Mariners looking
dangerous from set pieces with Nick
Rogan (twice), John Shaw and Matty
Brown bringing saves from home
keeper Jon Kennedy following
corners.
Matlock struggled to make much
headway against a solid Marine
defence.

BOOTLE hit Winsford United for six
Bootle on Saturday with five Bucks
players getting on the scoresheet. Dan
the half, latching on to the ball after a
defender had misjudged the flight but
lifting his shot over the top as
Kennedy raced off his line.
Matlock made a brighter start to the
second period, Paul Riley advancing
in to the left of the penalty area to
drive across goal, two home players
unable to get on the end of his cross at
the far post.
Davies tested Williams with a strong
drive from outside of the box, whilst at
the other end Rogan played in Rey for
an angled shot which Kennedy held at
the second attempt.
Marine took the lead on 58 minutes,
Louis Barnes’ free kick from the right
touchline bouncing around the
danger area before going in off Rey to
O’Connor opened the scoring on
seven minutes with Kevin Black
getting the second three minutes
later.
Black scored his second and Bootle’s
third on 19 minutes while Anthony
wrongfoot Kennedy. Goulding, who
had been booked in the first half, got a
second yellow for another foul on 67
minutes, to take the early bath and
leave the Mariners in defensive mode
for the rest of the game.
The Yellows looked to have seen out
time but were undone by a defensive
mix up, a free kick being poorly dealt
with, leading to Ian Holmes heading
back across goal for James Lukic to
sweep the ball home from close range,
after 88 minutes.
Matlock finished strongly and tested
Williams through Davies, the young
keeper doing well to gather a strong
drive low down at the foot of a post
and then pouch a rasping drive in the
dying seconds.
