fight to firm’s clients – and
target top London hotel

“Following the discovery and after a
number of enquiries were made the
50–year–old from the Crosby area was
arrested on suspicion of possessing
indecent images of children.
“He has been questioned and bailed
pending further enquiries.
“The protection of children is a priority for
Merseyside Police.
“We are committed to thoroughly
investigating all allegations involving
indecent images of children and similarly
committed to successfully prosecuting
offenders.
“As the matter is still under investigation it
would inappropriate to comment any
further.”

SACKED workers from a packaging company
based in Bootle have taken their fight to the
firm’s clients.
Some of the 140 employees from
Mayr–Melnhof Packaging (MMP) backed by
their union, Unite, have been leafleting cereal
maker Kellogg’s, a major client of MMP, sites
in Manchester and Wrexham.
According to Unite, Austrian–owned MMP
has unlawfully dismissed its staff and in the
escalating campaign to negotiate with
company bosses.
Unite regional officer Phil Morgan said:
“MMP engaged in a shameful act when it
dismissed and locked–out its hardworking
workforce.
“The leafleting of Kellogg’s – one of MMP’s
major clients – is part of our growing campaign
to get the company around the table and
achieve justice for our members.
“The illegal closure of the MMP Bootle factory
is a disgrace.”
The dispute has now escalated to embroil the
Norwegian government, a minority
shareholder in MMP.
And Unite has written to the company’s
shareholders in a bid to make them put
pressure on the management to negotiate a fair
settlement.
They announced that they would be leafleting
the prestigious Dukes Hotel in Mayfair this
week after it was revealed one of the hotel’s
directors also sat on the MMP board.

Secretaries Limited, is a named director of
Dukes Hotel, as well as being a director of
Austrian–owned MMP.
Their aim is to encourage St John’s Square
Secretaries Limited to publicly oppose the
actions of MMP.
Unite will be leafleting the boutique hotel in
London starting yesterday (April 10) and

continuing until Friday (April 13).
Unite regional officer, Phil Morgan added:
“The ripples from this dispute are spreading –
from economically–hit Merseyside to the plush
cocktail lifestyle of Mayfair.
“We intend to lobby, for as long as it takes,
those organisations that have any connection
with MMP to obtain a negotiated settlement
and justice for our members.”
Policeman sacked
for downloading

A FORMER top Bootle policeman
has been sacked after being
accused of using his work phones
to download internet porn and
swap dirty text messages.
Chief Inspector Mark Brew, 47,
was in charge of over 100 offices
on Merseyside Police’s Matrix
anti–gun unit before he was
dismissed last week at a gross
misconduct hearing.
The former officer has
previously held posts as Crosby
and Bootle Neighbourhood
Inspectors.
The hearing was also told how
the then popular policeman, who
is a married man, left a junior
officer in charge of his conference
while sneaking off to meet a
married woman.
He was also accused of making a
junior constable pick him up from
London and take him back to
Liverpool following a conference
rather than getting the train.
Brew admitted using a
police–issue iPhone and
Blackberry to view pornographic
websites and to send and receive
racy text messages with two
women, thought to be colleagues.
But he denied any wrongdoing
over leaving the conference and
sneaking off to meet the married
woman.
The former–officer was issued
with two weeks to appeal against
the decision.

Police said: “Merseyside Police
can confirm that a misconduct
hearing took place last week for a
serving 47–year–old police
officer.
“Following this hearing the
officer, a Chief Inspector, was
dismissed with immediate effect
for gross misconduct.
“Merseyside Police is absolutely
committed to the highest
integrity and professional
standards of its officers at all
times.”
Memorial service to be held
for victim of Titanic sinking

26 years ago, many families in the area are
still facing a daily battle against the effects
of living with extremely high radiation
levels.
Crosby Chernobyl Children’s group claim
that a months holiday in this country
significantly boosts the youngsters’ immune
systems, giving them a better life.
Group co–ordinator Marion Stoddart said:
“We normally host ten children, they spend
aweektogetherinNorthWalesandthen
live with host families in the Crosby,
Waterloo, Seaforth and Litherland areas.
“We are inviting families, with or without
children of their own, to host two children
for a period of approximately one week to
ten days during the three weeks from July
28 until August 18.”

to hold a special service in memory
of those who were lost to coincide
with the date of the ship’s sinking
this Sunday (April 15).
Rev. Simon Elliott said: “We have
had a few families walking around
and asking about it so we have
located the stone and I have been
asked to say a few words and hold a
brief service.
“Anyone who wants to come and
view the gravestone or take part in
the service is welcome to come
down.” A wreath will be laid at the
gravestone at 10.15am at St Luke’s
Church, Crosby, L23 5SE.
