Emanuel Gibson
"An edgy rocker with vibrance and attitude. Emanuel is also a poet with pure
passion in his words." Mizz Ruby
Born during a bar fight in Brooklyn, New York, Emanuel Gibson came into this
world swinging. The first day of his life, he lost his virginity took a man’s life
and developed an insatiable appetite for music. At the age of two, Gibson's
father lost him in a battle of the bands. Six months later, Gibson won himself
back. When he was three years old, music, started turning into “pop” music
the United States and Gibson became enraged at the thought of younger
generations missing out on sweet bluesy melodies. Hell-bent on supplying
music from his soul to the American people, he stowed away on a tour bus
traveling throughout the nation. Gibson was now in a strange land
(Hollywood, CA), armed with nothing but a Road Worn Fender Telecaster
and a musician’s wit. He quickly organized a gang of misfits and took over
music venues around the country. This enabled him to spread the gospel
incognito. Before he was a teenager, Gibson became an underground legend.
His name was whispered in back alleys and speakeasies across the nation,
and songs were sung to tell of his tales. The style of these songs would later
become known as Rock and Roll and the tunes can still be heard today.
Song
The wincing of her face, delivering the song in minor,
disgusted was her taste such as the coal build up on miners.
She seemed, not into things that were okay or even finer,
so ravenously sang without a care.
I sang to her because I had the feeling it was best,
but the song I sang to her, it only caused her much distress,
and the words that I wrote downtime from within the body's chest,
and she looked at me so daunting with a stare.
I do not believe the wrong that's beed decided and decreed,
only believing in the song that has invited you to me,
but if you choose to sing along that'd be polite and excite me,
but you don't just break apart hearts you see, you tear.
And all the anger that you seemed to have caused me from within,
and vice versa, me singing a song or heart provoking hymn.
And you second guess the purpose of my song. For me or him?
And I ponder 'cause I don't believe you dare.
But dare and dare you ay and I'm done with your episodes.
All this anger starts to build up and the lobe, it just corrodes.
all the value that we had it tarnished and then explodes,
and our relationship shows notice of the wear.
So i'm moving on without you taking time and taking song,
taking joy and happiness and all the love can come along.
i hope that someday you'll realize the things you said were wrong,
so the load will be much lighter that you bear.
Interview by The SassyYank
I was pleased to get the chance to speak with UK producer Alex Adair
this month. I first became aware of Alex when I ran across his track
‘Make Me Feel Better’ back in February of this year. This track is a
brilliant uplifting take on the classic by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell,
"Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing". I loved the track from the second I
pressed play, and left it on repeat. From that point on every track I have
heard him remix has been on point and has added quality to the
original. He is a producer that I have said from the start is one to watch.
Simply superb…
So to start, can you tell us a bit about you & how you started into the
music business?
I've always been around music. More classically when I was younger,
playing the piano and other instruments to a high level. I've also
studied music in one form or another throughout all tiers of education,
which finished this year with me getting a degree in Music Technology
from university. So music has always been in my life, but I only really
tried to push myself and get somewhere with it when I studied at
university.
12
www.AudiationMagazine.com
The first track I heard of yours about 9 months ago 'Make Me Feel Better',
was a brilliant take on a classic. What about this track to you think has
appealed to so many like myself?
I think it’s just a feel good track. Which I think most people can
appreciate. The vocal hook is very catchy, the chorus is bit different to
other tracks, and it’s got a summer feel to it.
Since that track you have had the opportunity to do some fantastic
remixes for some big names in the UK like Elle Eyre, Jessie Ware & most
recently Ed Sheeran. How has this all come about? And have you
enjoyed it?
They've come about off the back of 'Make Me Feel Better', and I've got a
great manager who works hard to get me these remixes. Yeah, I've loved
being able to remix such great artists, and I'm very pleased with the
reaction to the remixes and the fact that people are liking them.
What is your favorite part of being a producer?
Because I love what I do it means that it's not a chore for me to sit down
and make music. I really enjoy doing it. So the fact that I can make a living
from something that I do enjoy, and want to do, is the best thing for me.
What are your hopes for the future?
I just want to keep on making music and grow as an artist and producer.
Work on making more original tracks and keep on doing the remixes.
And having a good time while I'm doing that.
Ready to Rock
WARNING: This article contains ear-soothing guitar solos, very rugged men
and opinionated sentences. Read if you dare.
Speaking of, let’s play a childhood game of truth or dare.
Truth: You know rock, and you like rock.
Dare: Hold a fist in the air and lift your index and pinky finger.
This may be the first article not written about house music and synthetic
vibes, but I want to touch upon a genre called rock. What is it about the
connection of electric guitars, amplified bass and cymbal clashes that make
anybody want to whip their hair around with a fist in the air?
Rock is defined by the unexplainable feeling in your chest while standing in the
middle of a crowd at a concert and the drummer is just pounding on his foot
pedal. Rock is defined by a carefree performance, allowing everybody to
thrash out and flop around like a fish out of water. Rock is defined by doing an
air guitar solo…anywhere.
As much as a digital age our world is falling into, rock still exists and is highly
prevalent in our lives. Before grunge went mainstream, rock offered music
that people flocked to for a party. It presented lyrics that words just couldn’t
form, and messages that wouldn’t come across. It is a form of music that is
given countless rebirths, handing artists room to wiggle.
16 www.AudiationMagazine.com
When I think of rock, this is what I hear:
Rory Gallagher - Moonchild
From Dublin, Ireland, Rory Gallagher is a forgotten about rock legend. His
finger work on his 6-string brought about tunes that define a specified
sound and makes it seem effortless. In this guitar solo, there are glimpses in
the soul he carried through his music straight through his fingers. Even
though he was taken too early, there are artists off the yin yang to follow in
his path.
Twin Peaks - Making Breakfast
Up and coming Chicago band Twin Peaks throws it back to old school. With
all the technology available to auto-tune their voices and add some sort of
electronic, robot-sounding noise, they keep their music raw.
Eric Clapton- Wonderful Tonight
The one song that brings me to tears. Every time. Eric Clapton is an English
musician that nailed it with a song about old school romance. Solely because
of the lead guitar, “Wonderful Tonight” slows it down to create a ballad that
will make anybody feel beautiful.
That 70's Show theme song
For those people that still watch the season-finale-already-decade-old
show That 70’s Show, you are directly or indirectly jamming out to rock from
the 1970’s in the theme song.
Let me dare one more thing. At your next party, play the most rockin’ and
rollin’ song and see what happens. It will either take you on a trip back to the
70’s or on your knees for a guitar solo, guaranteed.
Interviews Eskuche & Nu Sky
Along with our beloved vodka, Russia has been the bearer of many great musicians
introducing to the world Igor Stravinsky, Nina Kraviz and New York based duo
Eskuche & Nu Sky look set to join the ranks. Since the release of their Mothership
EP on Nervous records in 2012, Eskuche & Nu Sky have accumulated an
astonishing amount of releases on numerous labels including Natural Rhythm,
Equilibrium Lab, Viva Music and now Hot Creations proving that hard work really
does pay off. Prior to their Acid Jump EP on Hot Creations, Audiation magazine
managed to catch up with Eskuche & Nu Sky as they journey continue on their road
to success.
EP: Acid Jump
Label: Hot Creations
How did you boys get into producing
music?
Eskuche: It was a long time ago. We
produced Tech House and Techno once
we got to New York. For me its started
many years ago as a hobby in my
hometown, i try to make some beats
and played music for a friends. But
when i moved to NYC I went to a crazy
rave party here and after it i went out
and realized that this is music i wanna
make, caught my vibe, you know.
Nu Sky: We started at different times. I
started to produce music about 15
years ago,I produced Underground
music, progressive house and after I
became an EDM DJ/Producer. It was
enough for me and after i came to the
US, met with max and we decided to do
a collaboration as we felt we were on
the same wave.
EK: Actually i moved to New York like 5
years ago and got on the DJ and
producing stuff, then like 6-8 Months
later Michael hit me up. I knew him from
Russia but we didn’t like vibes or chill
out a lot together. We just met
sometimes
NS: We just met up to smoke lol.
18
www.AudiationMagazine.com
EK: He hit me up, said right now you’re
into music in stuff, I said yeah so i sent
him a few of my tracks, he said wow
their really cool, you know. Then he
came for one week here to NY, I
remember we sat down in my studio
and it was the 1st of our tracks. We
started a track called “Mothership”
which was released on Nervous
Records. We went to a Marco Carola
party together here, Michael was very
excited about that you know and after
maybe a year he moved to NY.
NS: I came back to the underground
scene for like the 2nd time you know.
After rooming with Max and going to
Marco Carola party, I was very
impressed and inspired. We started to
produce our 1st track Mothership, that
was released on Nervous records then
we decided to do serious things. After
your 1st release I understand that you
started releasing on a whole load of
labels, you lot have a catalogue of
releases, you’ve just been smashing
them out.
power, our two minds in one, you know,
NU: In the same direction
EK: We decided to work more on
collaboration tracks rather than our
own music this year. This year its
bought a lot of good you know, a lot
good things have happened. A lot of
good tracks done, Hot Creations stuff
finally, some big things have started to
happen.
Who else have you got planned to
release on Gradus Records?
EK: We have some artist in mind. Some
artist from `New York and some from
actually the UK scene. We don’t want
to share names right now but some big
things coming to Gradus soon. We will
keep the label strictly vinyl.
EK: We produced together and released
some, then we started working on our
own productions. For starters I made
my tracks, he made his tracks, and we
made some different stuff, releasing
here n there. Then the start of this year
we decided to create this label GRADUS
Records, we decided to put all our like
19
When I interviewed Will Monotone he
said that that was something he liked How did you end up hooking up with
about the label, the fact that it was vinyl Nathan Kersaint for your track “Guns
only.
Up”?
NU: Yeah that’s important, Vinyl only its
keeps music being bought the classic
way and keeps music exclusive.
EK: Nowadays, Vinyl is coming back. as
well as the analogue stuff, analogue
synthesisers and we’re like coming back
to our roots.
I remember when i started buying music
i was buying vinyls.
EK: Yeah thats how it supposed to be.
Thats why Big labels like Hot Creations
are doing both. Digital and Vinyl, for
sure. because Vinyl is forever. Vinyl can
be passed down, like my children can
have it. Its a beautiful way. Digital tracks
can be lost in like 5, 7, 8,10 years, or
somebody can download it after 10
years and say “Its My track” and nobody
would know. A lot of music is released
right now it should be like more
exclusive.
NU: Actually like there is too many
digital stuff.
EK: Yeah Beatport release soo much
music, it never ends, you can download
like Hundreds Thousands, A lotta music.
EK: Nate is our friend here in NY. We do
like cool collaborations with him.
NS: Sometimes we make music
together, record some vocals with him..
EK: He does really cool Vocals. I told ya
he kind of reminds me of you. you’re like
brothers you know lol.
I like that track (Gunz Up), it had a very
distinctive sample, very catchy.
NS: It was original, it was recorded. Its
Nate voice, actually most of the vocals
on our tracks are original.
Okay, so its not really samples, always
somebody’s vocals?
EK: We try to record but sometimes we
just take some sample s from Youtube
or something like that, but to try record
is better.
20 www.AudiationMagazine.com
NS: Ye we sit down and then decide
what we want, record something or
maybe try to find something interesting
in the web. Decide what vibe we have a
the moment"
EK: Sometimes you can just find
something that fits perfectly and you
don’t need to record as it already fits
good.
Whats next on the horizon for Eskuche
& Nu Sky?
EK: Our remix for Russ gallop on Viva
music, planning maybe one more EP on
Hot Creations, work more on this style.
More UK style of music.
NS: One more very big thing on the way
with the Hot Creations crew. We have a
remix of our track ’99’ being done by one
of the worlds biggest producers. We are
keeping the info secret for now but will
release the info soon.
EK: You will see some big moves from us
in 2015, stay tuned
The Hot Creations power-force
show no sign of slowing down as
they get set to release Acid Jump
from New Yorkers Eskuche & Nu
Sky. Destroying dancefloors all
summer at the hands of Jamie
Jones, the title track is a high
energy hitter and the ultimate
weapon for peak time with big,
powerful builds yet packed with
groove, standout vocals and
futuristic synths taking you on a
journey into space. On the B-side
The Future follows suit with an
extremely infectious bassline and
trippy FX. This is a killer two track
release not to be missed!
Bass Adjustment is an international musical collaborative initiated in
2006 by songwriter/producer Rahá Poostchi. His talent pool is drawn
from an array of unique artists from all over the world who come
together to merge various musical styles from House to Pop,
Worldbeat, Funk, RnB, Dance and Smooth Jazz with influences from
Oriental, Latin and African music - always expressing the fundamental
principle of Unity in Diversity.
The collaborations of Bass Adjustment extend well beyond its specific
formation. They socialize as friends, they make musical CDs for kids
(with an educational twist) and they share a common vision for
community building on a local and global level:
“Most of us got together when we played basketball/streetball every
day in 1995. That’s when our bonds were forged. But it wasn’t until
years later, almost 20, that we got back together and discovered and
pursued our shared passion: promoting and living out unity in diversity
through music…” says Rahá Poostchi, Founder of Bass Adjustment.
25
You have long been a part of the music industry, what would you say is the biggest difference
now versus the 1990s? What is your favorite distinction? Least favorite?
It really depends on the context of the question; there have been lots of technological advances,
which have inspired a change in the way djs and artists perform. Back in the 90’s you had a pair
of 1210’s and a mixer and that was pretty much it. Depending on the style of music you played,
maybe a mic if you had an MC to accompany you. I laugh, thinking back as sometimes we didn’t
even have a mic and the MC would improvise with a broken pair of headphones! I’ve played many
a set on pirate radio back in the day where this happened! Nowadays, you have artists finger
djin’, controllerism and so much more. I’ve even played a dj set on my iPhone after arriving at a
gig without my records, which is testament to how far technology has progressed.
Another striking difference is the pace at which the industry moves. Years ago the industry
moved at a steady pace. Records would be hyped for six months, sometimes more, prior to
release. A record would stay in a djs box for a month at least and would get played hard.
Nowadays, songs appear to have a much shorter life, with some djs only playing a song once or
twice before wanting to move on and play something else.
The format of the music has obviously changed. For the most part it’s no longer tangible, which
is sad because some of the culture disappeared with it. Ask yourself how many iconic record
sleeves or CD covers you can think of? And how you feel about them? I can think of tons. Now
ask yourself how many digital albums or singles have had the same impact? With the exception
of Disclosure album sleeve, I’m struggling to think of any. Let me put it another way; reading the
meta-data of an mp3 doesn’t come close to taking the inlay out of a CD to read the song
credits and message from the artist. Unfortunately, music just seems to be less collectable
than it once was.
The music calendar is now dominated by festivals rather than by weekly club nights. Ok, we
used to have a lot of raves in the UK, which has similarities to festivals of today; big crowds and
so on. Back in the 90’s though the calendar was dominated by weekly club nights. In London,
you would have a choice of places to go every night of the week, every week. Clubs would
regularly pack thousands in. Unfortunately, that seemed to disappear not long after the
Millennium.
What would you say is the accomplishment you are most proud of so far in your career?
It depends on how you want to look at it. I worked on a song for Inaya Day for Slaag Records in
New York that debuted highest new entry (no.2) in the Media2Radio hype charts, I won dj
competitions as a teenager, I’ve dj’ed internationally, I’ve played festivals, I’ve played dj sets
purely of my own productions and remixes, I’ve had brand endorsements, I’ve worked for the
labels I wanted to work for and I’ve had the chance to work with and keep company with some
of my idols. However, it’s always the little things that make me smile the most. Hearing a car
drive by, walking into a retail store or turning on the radio and hearing your song. Standing on
the dancefloor and seeing and hearing people’s reaction as you song drops in the club, or getting
the biggest cheer of the night, hearing someone hum or sing your song, these moments are
priceless and what I live for. The personal memories made far outweigh any satisfaction from
record sales or commercial achievement.
f you had the opportunity to work with anyone no limitations, whom would you choose? Why?
The producers I’d love to work with are Kenny Dope, Todd Edwards and Boris D’lugosch. I can
probably credit Todd with the most flattering compliment he could have offered, when he
commented my drum programming reminded him of Kenny Dope. This being recognised at all,
made my day but the fact the comment was made by Todd Edwards made it all the more
special. Todd understood what I was doing.
Artist wise, I’d have loved to work with Michael Jackson if I’d have had the opportunity. I’d also a
big fan of JK, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, Floetry, Erykah Badu and Musiq Soulchild
amongst many others. Tracy Cruz, Teri Tobin and JRDN are three artists I admire and would
enjoy collaborating with soon. Tracy and Teri I’m in contact with and JRDN featured on the
Kardinal Offishall track ‘Freedom’.
What do you consider when you are looking at working with someone or a particular track?
How they can compliment the song, or more often than not how I can compliment the artist.
However, it’s mostly all about the song. I’d love to work with Tracy Cruz not just because I
admire her voice but also because she is such a good songwriter. I love her hooks and her
melodies. In the 90’s I grew up surrounded by contemporary rnb with strong, catchy hooks.
Tracy Cruz delivers!
What do you find to be the hardest thing about being a producer?
Finding the time to get everything done. Believe it or not, most of the time is not consumed in
the studio. I’ve learned to work pretty quickly these days, which I need to because trying to
manage my career is consuming enough. I hate to miss opportunities, which requires constant
networking. Social media channels need to be managed, release schedules, marketing, PR and so
forth. I used to be managed by Junior Palmer Management in Toronto. Junior also ran the label
Home Recordings and he was superb but unfortunately a few years ago he decided he wanted a
new career direction. Since then I have managed my own affairs.
Do you have any recommendations or advice for up and coming producers?
Think about the song and respect the song. Imagine you are part of the band performing and
ask yourself the question ‘could this be performed on stage?’. If the answer is no, ask yourself
why? By way of example, if you need an octopus to play your drums, chances are your doing
something wrong. Share your music.
When you are not doing music, what are some of the things you do to pass your time?
I’m a software developer and hardware engineer working in the Defense sector for one of
the largest engineering companies in the world and my day is mostly spent conceiving
ideas, working with new technology and building Proof of Concepts. As a professional
Creative of multiple disciplines, this is pretty much my life. I don’t watch TV; TV is for
wimps! I’m constantly dreaming ideas up and then creating them, be it music, software, or
hardware or any other way I can creatively and productively express myself. I am also
part of the Wayne Haskett Martial Arts Club and enjoy kickboxing.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you choose to go? Why?
I’d go back in time in my DeLorean. I couldn’t possibly tell you where or why, apart from to say
she was blonde and about 5’5!
Do you have any new and/or exciting things you would like readers to know?
Early 2015 look out for a remix I have done for Dichali featuring Amrick Channa who starred on
TV show The Voice. I’m also looking forward to working with Duce Martinez on some new
material for his label in New York and of course ill be collaborating again soon with my good friend
and fellow producer James May (8th Note). After nearly 18 months I will also finally release a
track entitled ‘All my Sons’. The demo mix of ‘All My Sons’ featured as the opening track on my
last mixtape, Deep & Soulful Mix Series #35 which is available on my website.
What is your favorite type of food?
Unprocessed foods, if possible! I eat a lot of fruit. I love super fruits like cranberries.
What is your favorite Christmas tradition?
Everyone getting together and the children of the family open their presents on Christmas Day.
We also have a family tradition where at the stroke of midnight on NYE, all the children at home
are given money to put in their pockets and then go outside and walk through the front door.
Looking in the New Year with money in your pocket brings good luck.
Do you have any recommended artists to look out for in 2015?
Alpines - Saviour
London duo Alpines have unveiled the brand new video for latest single
Saviour.
Directed by the groups’ singer Catherine Pockson, the new video represents
Alpines’ most daring and visually stunning effort yet. Shot on the Gower in
Wales, the visuals for Saviour feature idyllic backdrops, where cascading hills
meet restless coastlines to provide the perfect setting for the emotionally
charged piece of music the viewer is presented with.
Speaking of the video, Alpines singer Pockson said, “For me this video came as
an all encompassing experience, where it took all of my energy and creative
strength to try and represent the track, which is a very important song to
me.”
“Saviour is about the strength of a bond that you have with somebody and
that bond represents a lifeline and something that is within your blood and
veins, which to me is so rich and strong.”
Having burst onto the scene in 2010, Alpines quickly gained acclaim for their
self produced releases and captivating live shows. The last few years have
seen the two-piece tour the UK with acts such as Florence & The Machine
and The Naked & Famous, as well as collaborating with artists including Sub
Focus, Maya Jane Coles and The Maccabees.
ROKURO
Interview with B1G-PR0J3Ct by The Sassy Yank
To start with can you tell our readers a bit about youR music background?
I’ve been in to underground dance music since around 1991 when I first
stumbled across Pulse FM on the dial and got hooked on the sounds of
hardcore and early Jungle, I got two Goodmans decks (actually scrap that
they weren’t decks they were hi-fi turntables) and a cheap Kam mixer the
following year and started picking up choons from Music Power Records
in Ilford and Boogietimes in Romford.
In 1995 after I finished school at the tender age of 16 I visited Ibiza with
my best mate and we found ourselves kicking every night off with a visit
to the Simple Bar to listen to Jon Ulysses – we were buying mixtapes from
him and he’d run out of the commercial stuff and sold us a tape titled
“Garage” – that was the turning point for me musically, from that point
forward, while I never lost my love for DnB and Jungle, Garage was my
thing.
When I got back from the trip I started to buy stacks of Garage vinyl from
Music Power from Dean Savonne and Ian the shops Saturday shit! I
managed to convince my old man to get me some twelves on finance and
then it was game on – almost every spare bit of cash from my day job went
on vinyl – but if I’m honest while it was my passion I never dreamed of
earning a living from it or playing out however...
36 www.AudiationMagazine.com
My mate Tony Wright had other ideas and blagged us shows on Smoove fm
back in 1998 – I did my show on Saturday 4-6pm and didn’t look back, shortly
after joining the station my day job went south and I ended up spending a
huge amount of time at Music Power – one day Dean was clearing up and
asked if anybody knew what tune he had in his hand by the catalogue number
to save him spinning it and I knew that, even on a white with nothing but the
cat no., it was M-Dubs “49’ers” – he offered me a job at the shop on the spot
which I gladly accepted.
Shortly after joining the shop Dean blagged me a set for Trinity at the
Chunnel and from there my DJ’ing started to pick up and soon I was playing at
Smove at the Ministry, as well as throughout London and even taking garage
to Manchester! I moved from Smoove FM to Deja Vu via Freek before finally
finding my Friday night home on Erotic FM.
Ian (the Saturday guy) and I began knocking up productions on a breaky tip
and found ourselves quickly picked up by Damian Lazarus for his Vertical
Drop label, we put tracks out as Subvert, Re-Animator, Dubwise Selective as
well as under our own names but due to some licensing issues our
productions fizzled out in 2001 when I became ill and sadly Music Store
closed its doors.
Fast forward to 2004 and after making a recovery from surgery I bumped in to
DJ Em-Tek in Romford who asked me to pop in to Boogietimes as they needed
somebody to look after the Garage section – I jumped at the chance and was
quickly working for Boogietimes sister company Innovation, which to this day
remains a serious player in the DNB promotions scene, and had found a path
back in to music.
After Boogietimes closed and I parted ways with Innovation I found myself
selling DJ Equipment at DJ Empire in Chadwell Heath – I had already begun to
dabble in some production kit but in 2009 I had really caught the bug and
knocked up the B1G remix of Ciara and JT’s “Love Sex and Magic” which was
the first track that really caught peoples ears – it was battered by EZ and a
huge amount of DJs on the pirates so I spent the next 12 months knocking up
2 step bootys of the biggest tracks at the time. The bootlegging continued
into 2010, 2011 but by 2012 my work rate and output slowed due to my
expanding family and, if I’m honest, I was losing interest with the 2 step
sound so I started to make 4x4 bootys.
37
Unfortunately 2012 ended miserably for me personally and 2013 was a
dark year where as a family we suffered a huge loss – as we came to the
end of the year I was determined to push on and at the same time I
downloaded a Mi-Soul radio show by Matt Jam and was shocked to hear
him playing new music with the kind of vibe that got me in to H’n’G – I
was hooked and I knew exactly where I was heading, straight to the LAB!
My first few 4x4 tracks of 2014 were well received and while I was
knocking stuff up at 124bpm everybody was pitching them up to include
them in their UKG sets – I believe in supply and demand and started to
raise the tempo and decided that I’d like to share my music with as many
people as possible – so with this in mind I created the filthy boots series
which is nearing the release of volume 10 (which will also see the rerelease
of a remixed filthy 1) and from this series came the opportunity to
put together official mixes for CR2 records for artists such as Moon Boots,
Jumpstar, Ron Carroll and let’s not forget my fellow Nu Skool producers
DJ Junior, Martin Carr, Elski and Kahniche. I’m currently discussing some
really exciting remix projects with some old skool veterans as well which
if they come together will be wicked.
While knocking up the filthy boots I’ve maintained an output of original
tracks and was approached by Jepadee to put something out on Bumpa
Funk and so the Deeper Love EP was created and it’s follow up which will
feature my latest track “I’ll Give You” will also be released through the
label. But there’s still a tonne of stuff that remains unreleased which will
probably find it’s way on to my upcoming mixtape...
When is the first time you recall music as something you wanted to do in a
serious way?
I fell in to music as something to take seriously in 1998 when was offered
the job at Music Power – I’ve never looked back since!
What is music to you?
My escape – the vibe either in the studio or behind the decks takes me
somewhere that the headaches of everyday life can’t reach me.
38
www.AudiationMagazine.com
What are your hopes for your music career for the few years?
I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing right now because, thanks to
the support I’ve received, I’m sharing my vibe with like-minded people!
The B1G sounded is constantly evolving and I’m hoping that the
evolution will take me back in to club land behind the decks to join the
party!
What are some if your favorite things to do with your spare time?
I’m a family guy, I’ve got three amazing children who give me the
strength to push on no matter what. If I’m not in the lab and I don’t have
the phone glued to my ear talking music then I’m spending time with
them.
Favorite meal?
Anything fried – that’s why I’m the B1G PR0J3CT ;-)
What would you say has helped your career the most so far?
Perseverance and positive attitude – the harder I focus the further I
seem to progress. I’ve also been a “right place, right time” guy – as
much as I don’t want to say that luck has played a part I think certainly
in the early years that’s been the case.
Any advice for other aspiring artists?
Believe in yourself, stay focused and network like your life depended on
it – the bigger your network, be it socially or closer to you, the easier it
is to get yourself heard.
Yolanda Duke & Arturo Sandoval - Contigo En La Distancia
Winner of IMA Independent Music Awards 2013, Best Latin Song
"Stunning voice and composition, full of cultural influence." Mizz Ruby
Graciously dedicated to the loving memory of The King of Latin Music Tito
Puente. A gift from Yolanda & Arturo, to honor Tito's 91st birthday on April
20th 2014.
Produced, Arranged and Performed by Arturo Sandoval. Duke certainly
holds a strong connection with the Latin music’s history, but she also looks
into the future by connecting with another Latin Jazz giant, Arturo
Sandoval. The two musicians tackle a Cuban standard, the timeless song
”Contigo En La Distancia,” written by César Portillo de la Luz and loved
around the world for its lush harmony, gorgeous melody, and potent lyrics.
From the introductory trumpet flurry to a closing statement that pushes
notes into the stratosphere, Sandoval approaches the song with a warm
embrace, reflective of his close connection to the music. In fact, Sandoval
puts a major mark on the song by creating the arrangement and playing all
of the different instruments on the track.
Sandoval’s complete musicianship brings out the best in Duke, helping her
deliver an impassioned performance, full of powerful dynamic range, subtle
nuance, and personal interpretation. There’s some reciprocal inspiration
here as Duke captures with her vocal’s rich tone and wide vibrato
Sandoval’s lyrical trumpet solo that connects the different pieces of the
melody in an elegant fashion.
Between Sandoval and Duke, you’ve got two musicians who understand
the history of Latin Jazz and hopefully their continued collaboration will help
open new ground to move it into the future.
The project started as a deep house track with a deep organic
bassline. It had a great sound, however with no breakdown. The
process of creating the breakdown began methodically, it then came
to have more of a Trance feel, rather than house. The initiative was
taken to turn it into a Trance track as the lead melody was so
inspiring. Elements were twisted, and emotion added for extra oomph
& Trancey atmosphere. Once completed, the track needed the
perfect name. Sun in Sand, to fit the surrounding beauty of the
Mauritian beaches & coastline.
"The DJ Wad - Sun In
Sand Original Mix
has a nice transition
between a soft
melody, uplifting and
driving atmospheric
baselines and energy,
it's well balanced and
a pleasure to turn on.
Enjoyed this track.
The (Hypaethrame
Remix) has a great
driving force behind it
right from the getgo,
the perfect touch
of energy running
within it and yet still
holds a perfect touch
to the softer side
within the release
later in the track
(atmosphere), well
produced and
thought out."
It’s no secret we love garage here at Slime. Whether its killer floor-fillers or
ethereal two-step jams, there’s a little place in our hearts for them all. So we’re
excited to be unveiling the first in an ongoing series of compilations centred
around up and coming producers making their mark in the genre, from around
the world. ‘Future Sound Of Garage’ looks to the producers that will be staking a
claim to the sound in the near future. We’ve assembled ten of the most exciting
producers coming up in the scene, who have each contributed an exclusive track
for this release.
The sultry, low-slung groove of ‘Swerve’ from London-based producer
A.Motion opens proceedings, full of sparse percussion and seductive vocals,
before giving way to the bumpy rhythms of Finland’s Sleezy with ‘Wait’, bubbling
over with retro basslines and snapping clicks. If you prefer that throwback style
but brought bang up to date, then Londoner Urbani comes correct with
‘Dangerous’, packed to the brim with that nostalgic skip and swing strapped to a
killer bassline – something it shares in common with the proceeding thriller from
Leeds producer Bad Habit. ‘Trying Times’ floats in on subtle chords before
detonating with expertly-clipped vocals and pulsating bass.
Dutch producer David Eliza weaponises his contribution ‘Scapegoat’ with
supersonic beats and deadly basslines built around an insistent vocal sample
that will have people stampeding to the dancefloor. Similarly, Yorkshire
newcomer Jonah delivers a blistering mutation of garage with ‘Hazmat’, dark
chords and staccato basslines swirling in the mix over a thundering 4x4 beat.
Italian producer Bodwan delivers a warehouse classic in the making with an
insistent piano loop and see-saw bassline, perfect for strobe-lit tunnel raves
everywhere. If it’s epic you’re after then look no further than the near 8-minute
odyssey from Blackboxx. ‘Levitate Me’ starts one way, building swirling chords,
ethereal vibes and soaring vocals, before exploding into a roaring bassline
monster that will make your chest rattle.
Macao-based producer Burnie delivers the penultimate track with the beautiful
‘Comet Dancing’, expertly built around a sonorous vocal and clipped two-step
vibes. Deft touches of 808 and deep swashes of melody switch the style,
keeping you guessing until the very end. Finally, Australian producer Greed closes
the compilation in fine style with the gorgeous ‘Deep Blue’, replete with
shimmering piano keys and hazy percussion – guaranteed to elevate your mind
into a blissful state of being.
Interviews Alice Rose
At the tender age of 22, Alice Rose is a young talented
DJ/Producer from a small town in Kent with what seems to be
a very bright future ahead of her. Fresh back from a season on
the white isles of Ibiza Alice is determined to hit the ground
running in 2015 by keeping herself locked away in the studio
preparing fresh music. Prior to her up and coming release
“Bounce That” as part of the Future Underground EP on the
legendary Cr2 Records, Audiation Magazine managed to catch
up with Alice Rose for her instalment of the HOT 6.
