It is in this region that Burgundy begins its transition into the Southern French style of wine.<br />

In the past it mainly produced red wines from Gamay but now there is much more emphasis<br />

placed on white wines from Chardonnay, try the Macon Cave de Vire which offers an excellent<br />

alternative to Chablis.<br />

Lovely peachy aromas on the nose, leading to a full and ripe citrusy white wine.<br />

Long and lingering finish with gentle acidity make this wine a good match for<br />

many rich fish dishes.<br />

BEAUJOLAIS<br />

Beaujolais enjoyed a boost in popularity recently, due to the superb quality of the 2009 vintage,<br />

recognised as one of the best for 50 years. In good years, such as 2009 and 2010, Beaujolais is a really<br />

delightful wine with lots of rich fruit flavour and soft tannins. It is at its best drunk very slightly chilled.<br />

Our wine from the village of Chiroubles, from Jean-Pierre Large is a wine of exceptional quality.<br />

Attractive ruby colour. Full flavoured Gamay character with soft red<br />

fruit flavours and balancing acidity.<br />

The most popular of the Beaujolais Crus, this attractive ruby coloured wine<br />

has soft berry fruit and floral aromas on the nose and rich palate showing<br />

redcurrant fruit character.<br />

Drink with: grilled free range pork sausages, grilled lamb cutlets. £££<br />

Domaine Cheysson is a lovely 26 hectare property run by Jean-Pierre Large,<br />

who produces lovely attractive Beaujolais with soft but rich fruit flavours and<br />

excellent balance and length of flavour.<br />

Drink with: BBQ chicken leg or lamb cutlets. £££<br />

149198 Morgon Cave de Bel Air 2008/09 12.5% 75cl B VE<br />

Morgon is the 2nd largest Beaujolais Cru after Brouilly. The wines normally have<br />

more structure and depth that either Brouilly or Chiroubles. This wine has nice<br />

cherry fruit characters and length of flavour.<br />

Drink with: perfect with coq au vin, plain duck breast. £££<br />

ALSACE<br />

Alsace lies in eastern France between the Vosges mountains to the west and the river Rhine to the east.<br />

The wine growing areas are Bas-Rhin near Strasbourg and Haut-Rhin in the south, with the most reputable<br />

vineyards sited in the lower foothills of the Vosges. Predominantley a high quality, white wine area, using<br />

Reisling, Gewurtztraminer, Tokay-Pinot Gris and Sylvaner, varietals not widley used in the rest of France.<br />

Aromatic nose, fruity, floral and spicy, rich, elegant. A concentration of aromas<br />

supported by a good freshness and spicy fruit on the palate.<br />

BIN END Fresh lemony nose, floral, with a mineral touch. It’s a dry wine, very elegant, with a good aromatic finish.<br />
