19 ATTENTION: While wardrobe (ward+robe) should refer to a small room
or cabinet for holding clothes, it has come to mean in American parlance
the collection of clothes or costumes within the wardrobe… which makes
the answer to the next question (Which type of wardrobe lasts long?) “The
type that is never worn”! The correct term for the small room in Hindi is
तोशाख़ाना, or, more properly, in an earlier epoch, तोशक ख़ाना. तोशक is
also either a two-ply chador (like a quilt) or a soft mattress.
20 Synonym: कोठर
21 मृितका /मी is earthenware or clay and therefore not as fine as what
some consider ceramic. The Oriental type (porcelain) is usually referred to
as चीनी मी का (because made from from china clay, i.e., kaolin), चनाई
मी, or चीनी का बरतन; still, we also see transliterations of the English,
as in पोसलेन, (कजरया) सरेमक/ सरेमस/ सेरामक/ सेरामस, these
latter often referring to tile.
22 These vases are generally carved from cinnebar wood soaked in the sap of
the Lacquer or Varnish Tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum, formerly named
Rhues Verniciflua), called in Hindi, वानश वृ. Cinnebar (the wood) is not
to be confused with cinnabar, mercuric sulfide, which in Hindi is
गुर/ हंगुल * and used to make vermilion, संदूर /सदूर/ संगरफ. [*
