Section Six Myth: There’s Nothing I Can Do About Domestic Violence Reality: There’s Always Something You Can Do If friends or family members are being abused: ◗ Call police if you see or hear abuse. ◗ Ask if they’re safe or need someone to talk to. ◗ Explain that FREE and CONFIDENTIAL help is available for victims and their children at their local domestic violence programs, and encourage them to call the program hotline. ◗ Offer a ride to a local shelter, or to baby-sit while they attend counseling appointments. ◗ Offer to board their pets. How to help your local domestic violence program: ◗ Volunteer your time. ◗ Donate money, phone or gas cards, gift certificates, bus tickets, etc. ◗ Organize a fundraising event or activity. ◗ Offer to board pets or livestock while victims are in shelter. ◗ Sponsor a family for a holiday meal, holiday gifts, etc. If friends or family members are abusive: ◗ Call police if you see/hear abuse. ◗ Tell them there are no excuses for abuse, and they may lose their families, friends, homes and jobs if it doesn’t stop. ◗ Hold them accountable for their behavior. ◗ Support their efforts to obtain batterer intervention treatment. Contact your local domestic violence program to learn more about what you can do to help. Community Response This information can help community leaders* identify and access community resources in the immediate aftermath of a critical incident. These resources will have lasting impact as the community honors those lost and remembers the incident across generations. Programs may want to share this chapter with other community leaders and maintain it as a reference for follow-up to crisis interventions. Section seven No disaster, crisis or traumatic event happens in a vacuum. Those affected are more likely to recover with the support of those around them – partners, children, family, co-workers, faith communities, and the community within which they live and interact daily. Envision ripples in a pond when a stone is cast; this is similar to the rippled effect trauma may have when cast into the life of a survivor.
