3. RESULTS 3.1. THE CHANGES IN DRAGONFLY FAUNA AND DISTRIBUTION IN LATVIA Changes in the faunistic composition. As the result of the study (Kalniņš 2011a) 19 species were identified whose borders of distribution areas or separate localities are relatively close to the territory of Latvia or which are known as species that rapidly distribute to the northern direction. Seven species from these are mentioned in literature as probable for Latvia. At the same time 5 species that are included in these lists were recorded for the first time in Latvia during the last 20 years (Table 1). According to the identified species 303 specimens of the corresponding species were checked in collections. Orthetrum brunneum was found in collections while Sympetrum fonscolombii and S. pedemontanum were discovered according to photographs. A total of 84 potential localities of species were checked by carrying out the search of species in nature. Two species were recorded – Anax parthenope and S. fonscolombii. By comparing the fauna of Latvia and the adjacent territories and taking into consideration the fast distribution in northern direction of the two species – Lestes barbarus and Crocothemis erythraea – (Dijkstra 2006; Termaat et al. 2010), a list including 12 species was drawn in order to forecast the changes in dragonfly fauna (Table 2). The closest localities of Aeshna serrata and Orthetrum coerulescens have been found in Estonia, to the north from the territory of Latvia (Martin et al. 2008). Table 1.
