Physical EducationPhysical Education examines the biological, physiological, psychological, social and cultural influences onperformance and participation in physical activity. Theory and practice are integrated in this study which isapproached through both the study of, and participation in, physical activity.The study prepares students for such fields as human movement, nursing or physiotherapy, as well asproviding valuable knowledge and skills for participating in their own sporting and physical activity pursuits.StructureThe study is made up of four units:Unit 1: Bodies in MotionThis unit looks at how the body systems work together to produce movement and analyses this motion usingbiomechanical principles. Through practical activities students explore the relationship between the bodysystems and physical activity. Students are introduced to the functioning of the body’s energy systems and thecharacteristics of their pathways. They explore biomechanical principles and how they can be used to refinemovement.Unit 2: Sports Coaching and Physically Active LifestylesThis unit explores a range of coaching practices and their contribution to the effective coaching and improvedperformance of an athlete. Students are also introduced to physical activity and the role it plays in the healthand wellbeing of the population.Unit 3: Physical Activity Participation and Physiological PerformanceThis unit introduces students to an understanding of physical activity from a physiological perspective. Inparticular, the contribution of energy systems to performance in physical activity is explored, as well as thehealth benefits to be gained from participation in regular physical activity.Unit 4: Enhancing physical performanceThis unit studies improvements in physical performance, in particular fitness. Students learn to accuratelyassess the particular energy and fitness needs of the sport or activity for which the athlete is training, throughanalysis of data collected from a game or activity.EntryThere are no prerequisites for entry to Units 1, 2 and 3. Students must undertake Unit 3 prior to undertakingUnit 4. Physical Education Units 3 & 4: A condition of acceptance into this course is payment of a materialscharge approx. $20.00 (Units 1 & 2) or $30.00 (Units 3 & 4) due by <strong>Course</strong> Confirmation Day Enrolment inthis subject is not confirmed unless payment is received by this date.72
