Product Design and TechnologyStudents acquire and apply knowledge of a range of design factors and fundamentals to develop solutions tomeet specific requirements. They draw upon knowledge and methods associated with determining humanneeds and wants, product purpose and function, visual and aesthetic. Factors, properties and characteristics ofmaterials, production processes and technologies, economic, environmental and ecological impacts andinnovation through design and technology.StructureThe study is made up of four units.Unit 1: Design modification and productionThis unit focuses on the methods used by a designer to design a product and apply various processes to redesignan existing product and produce it. Includes research documentation and folio presentation. Safety andmanufacturing skills are encompassed in this unit.Unit 2: Collaborative designIn this unit, working as an individual within a team of designers, each student will produce a product workingalong a theme which has been developed by the collaborative team members. Identification of design optionsand production planning in response to a design brief for a range of products is the emphasis leading to theproduction of the work piece.The <strong>College</strong> is offering students the opportunity to study Design and Technology under three strands inUnits 1 & 2 for 2014: (1) Wood (2) Metal or (3) Textiles.Unit 3: Design, technology innovation and manufactureUnit 4: Product development, evaluation and promotionIn Units 3 and 4 the student will explore the complex forces involved in the design and development of aproduct for the mass market. They also focus on how the judgements of products can be informed by acomparison of products in terms of their quality, usefulness and appeal. The role and influence of productpromotion and marketing are also considered.EntryThere are no prerequisites for entry to Units 1, 2 and 3. Students must undertake Unit 3 prior to undertakingUnit 4.Cost:A condition of acceptance into units 1-4 is payment of a materials charge: Approx. $106/$116 due by <strong>Course</strong>Confirmation Day. Enrolment in this subject is not confirmed unless payment is received by this date.74
