Visual Communication and DesignThis study is intended to assist students in the understanding, production and interpretation of a range of visualcommunications. It involves a study of the design and presentation of visual communication, which includesan understanding of, and application of, drawing and drawing conventions, design elements, principles and thedesign process. The study also provides the opportunity to develop an informed, critical and discriminatingapproach to areas of design encountered in everyday life.StructureThe study is made up of four units:Unit 1: Visual communicationThe main purpose of this unit is to enable students to prepare instrumental drawings of objects and explorefreehand drawing from direct observation. Students also experiment and explore the application of designelements and principles in the preparation of solutions to suit specific purposes. Students study how the designprocess is applied in the production of visual communications.Unit 2: Communication in contextThe main purpose of this unit is to enable students to develop practical skills by generating images anddeveloping them through freehand and instrumental drawing. The ways in which information and ideas arecommunicated visually are also explored through the analysis of the work of others. The design process isapplied in developing visual communication solutions to set tasks.Unit 3: Visual communication practicesThe main purpose of this unit is to enable students to produce visual communications through the applicationof the design process to satisfy specific communication needs. Students also study the production of visualcommunications in a professional setting, and evaluate examples of visual communications.Unit 4: Designing to a briefThe main purpose of this unit is to enable students to prepare one brief that defines the need or needs of aclient. Students apply the design process to produce developmental work and two final presentations based onthe brief.EntryThere are no prerequisites for entry to Units 1, 2 and 3. Students must undertake Unit 3 prior to undertakingUnit 4Cost:A condition of acceptance into this course is payment of a materials charge of approx. $101.00/$111.00 dueby <strong>Course</strong> Confirmation Day.
