A central religious imperative (inboth Western and Eastern religions) discourages expenditures ofsperm not instrumental in effecting impregnation, because wealthwasted instead of invested is wealth lost. T he phrase “spermaticeconomy” expressed this same idea in the secular realm, particularlyin the nineteenth century. T he idea that when a manspends sperm he uses up his most significant natural resource— thathe spills his sons into nonexistence— both precedes and survivesspecific religious dogma and quasi-scientific theorizing. One meaningof the verb to spend is “to ejaculate. ” One meaning of the verb tohusband is “to conserve or save”; its archaic meaning is “to plow forthe purpose of growing crops. ” A husband, in this sense, is one whoconserves or saves his sperm except to fuck for the purpose ofimpregnating. In the male system, control of money means sexualm aturity, as does the ability to control ejaculation. T he valuing andconserving of money, using money to make wealth— like thevaluing and conserving of sperm, using sperm to make wealth—demonstrates a conformity to adult male values, both sexual andeconomic. A boy spends his sperm and his money on women. Aman uses his sperm and his women to produce wealth. A boyspends; a man produces. Spending indicates an immature valuing ofimmediate gratification. Producing signifies an enduring commitmentto self-control and to the control of others, both crucial in theperpetuation of male supremacy. T he owning and impregnating ofa woman in marriage or in some form of concubinage (howeverinformal) are seen as mastery of spending without purpose, the firstclear proof that masculinity is established as an irrefutable fact,
