Anti-Oppression Framework for Child Welfare in OntarioAugust 2010not have the same access to power and resources within an organizational context. Systemicoppression occurs when we see patterns of oppression negatively impacting particularmarginalized groups and fail to respond.As anti-oppression allies, we must continually focus our attention on the ways in which society isstructured and on the related processes within our institutions and organizations that reinforcethe power of some groups (politically, economically, socially, and culturally) over others. Anultimate goal is to find ways in which we can share power.AO is a way of life, not this thing you can do and set aside, [it is the] lens that you’re lookingthrough the world at, people starting off at different levels. Equity means to treat peopledifferently in order to create equal outcomes.Have I ensured the actions I have taken areequitable, collaborative and power sharing?How can I measure this?If Yes, how can I promote these AO actions atan institutional or systemic level? If no, whatdo I need to do differently?ExampleIn my daily interactions, do I think about howmy social location provides me power toaddress or not to address the issue ofoverrepresentation of children in care? At anindividual level, do I work with children andfamilies in a way that demonstrates that I amnot the expert, and takes into account theimpact of historical and systemic oppression ofservice users, and work from a place where Ihave truly listened to and understood theservice user’s identified needs?Do I question in what ways I am a part of thedominant way of thinking (through my sociallocation) and in what ways can I work that donot demonstrate a place of dominance? Aswell, what can I do to address systemicoppression for service users?Do I make it a point to bring up at meetingsthe issue of why there are so few racializedminorities or Aboriginal peoples employed atthe agency even if I am not from that group, orwhy there are so few representatives from thecommunity at planning meetings? Do Isuggest alternative action strategies that willresult in more equitable outcomes?Do I approach my work in ways that areequitable resulting in the reduction of thenumber of racialized and Aboriginal children incare?11 | P a g e
