48 2005 NORILSK NICKEL • ANNUAL REPORT •NORILSK NICKEL • ANNUAL REPORT •200549Taimyr PeninsulaThe Taimyr Peninsula incorporates seven mines producingcopper-nickel sulfide ores from the Oktyabrsky, Talnakh andNorilsk-1 deposits. Various grades of ore contain nickel, copper, cobalt, platinum, palladium, gold and other valuableconstituents.Enrichment assets include the Talhakh and Norilsk EnrichmentPlants. The Talnakh Enrichment Plant processes rich ores fromthe Talnakh and Oktyabrsky deposits to produce nickel, copperand pyrrhotite concentrates. The Norilsk Enrichment Plant processesthe entire volume of disseminated ores and cuprous oresfrom the Oktyabrsky and Talnakh deposits and stored pyrrhotiteconcentrate to produce nickel and copper concentrates. The metallurgical capacities of the Taimyr Peninsula include theNadezhda Metallurgical Plant, the Nickel and the CopperPlants.Technical map of production at Taimyr PeninsulaThe Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant processes all the nickel andpyrrhotite concentrates produced by the Talnakh EnrichmentPlant, some of the nickel concentrates from the NorilskEnrichment Plant (about 15%) and all the copper concentratefrom the matte separation area of the Nickel Plant roastingshop to produce high-grade matte, copper anodes and elementalsulfur. The Nickel Plant processes the majority of the nickel concentrategenerated by the Norilsk Enrichment Plant (about 85%),all enriched stored pyrrhotite concentrate and some highgradematte from the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant to producenickel cathodes and cobalt. The Copper Plant processes copper concentrates producedby the Talnakh Enrichment and Norilsk Plants and copperanodes from the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant to producecopper cathodes, elemental sulfur and sulfuric acid. TheMetallurgical shop, which is a division of the Copper Plant, recycles slag from the copper and nickel electrolysis shopsand slags from copper production in the Kola Peninsula to produceprecious metal concentrates, metallic silver, seleniumand tellurium. The Group has outsourced the refining of the precious metalsconcentrates from the Taimyr Peninsula to an independentprecious metals refinery – Krasnoyarsk Precious MetalsPlant under a toll refining agreement.Kola PeninsulaThe Group mines the Zhdanovskoe, Zapolyarnoe, Kotselvaaraand Semiletka deposits in the Kola Peninsula, where it operatesfour mines extracting disseminated sulfide ores containingnickel, copper and sundry by-products.Disseminated ores produced by the Kola mines are processedby the Penchenganickel Enrichment Plant to produce collectivecopper and nickel concentrates. In 2004, the roasting shopwas made part of the Enrichment Plant. The Enrichment Plantproduces pellets and briquettes, which are then processed inthe smelting shop to produce high-grade matte for further processingat Severonickel. Severonickel processes high-grademattes received from the Taimyr Peninsula and Pechenganickel. Its key products include nickel and copper cathodes, carbonylnickel, cobalt concentrate, precious metals concentrates andsulfuric acid. The Group has outsourced the refining of the precious metalconcentrates from the Kola Peninsula under toll refiningagreements to an independent precious metals refinery(Krasnoyarsk Precious Metals Plant).Technical map of production at Kola Peninsula:Pechenganickel Combined Plant8MMC NORILSK NICKEL NOT INCLUDINGGOLD MINING ASSETS (POLUS)Notes:(1) SPC – stored pyrrhotite concentrate(2) ESPC – enriched stored pyrrhotite concentrate(3) MSA – matte separation area(4) KPMP – Krasnoyarsk Precious Metals Plant
50 2005 NORILSK NICKEL • ANNUAL REPORT •NORILSK NICKEL • ANNUAL REPORT •200551Technical map of production at Kola Peninsula: Severonickel Combined PlantTransport and logistics streamThe Taimyr Peninsula is completely isolated from mainlandRussia's road and railroad networks. As a result, all goods areshipped to and from the Peninsula by sea, river or air.The Taimyr Peninsula ships refined nickel and copper to endusers and high-grade matte to the Kola Peninsula using theNorth Sea Route via the Group-owned Dudinka Port located80 km from Norilsk on the Yenisei River. The Taimyr Peninsulaalso uses the North Sea Route to receive raw materials andother supplies from Murmansk Commercial Sea Port andArkhangelsk Commercial Sea Port and during the summermonths by the Yenisei River. The North Sea Route is open fornavigation throughout the year, except for a short period fromlate spring to early summer when the ice melts and waterlevels rise, which does not affect the continuity of metal supplyto the market. The Murmansk Sea Shipping Companyprovides shipping services on the North Sea Route. In 2002, Norilsk Nickel signed a 10-year agreement with theRussian Ministry of Transport under which the Governmentguarantees open shipping lanes via the North Sea Route. As of 2005, the Group owned 43.9% of the Yenisei RiverShipping Company and 53.1% of the Arkhangelsk CommercialSea Port.Metals produced in the Kola Peninsula are exported by sea viaMurmansk Commercial Sea Port and the St. Petersburg Portand delivered by railway to the domestic market. In 2005, the Kola Peninsula received power from OJSCKolenergo, a subsidiary of RAO UES. Starting from 1 October2005, OJSC Kolenergo was restructured through the spin-offof a number of companies specializing in the following areas:• power and heat generation (OJSC Kola Generation Company,OJSC Murmansk Heating and Power Plant, OJSC ApatitskayaHeating and Power Plant);• power transmission (OJSC Kola Transmission System); and• sales (OJSC Kola Power Sales Company). The Group's share in each of these companies is proportionateto its share in OJSC Kolenergo – 24.87%, of which:• MMC Norilsk Nickel – 14.85%;• Kola MMC – 10.02%.Since 1 January 2006, Kola Peninsula has been receiving powerfrom OJSC Kola Power Sales Company. After the completion of formation of OJSC TGK-1, the Groupwill stop being the blocking shareholder of the generatingcompany and will not be able to affect its decisions as before. Therefore, further holding of shares in Kolenergo and spunoffcompanies stopped being practical in terms of securing energysupplies to the Group. On 25 November 2005, an agreement was reached and respectiveagreement was signed with Fortum Power and Heat Oyfor the sale of shares in OJSC Kolenergo and companies spunoff from it and owned by the Group.Geology streamMMC NORILSK NICKEL NOT INCLUDINGGOLD MINING ASSETS (POLUS)Stillwater Mining CompanyStillwater Mining Company, a majority-owned Group subsidiary, mines the J-M Reef deposit located in Montana, USA.Its two mines, Stillwater Mine and East Boulder Mine, producesulfide ores mainly containing palladium and platinum.Stillwater operates two enrichment plants located next to thetwo mines.Stillwater processes concentrate produced by the enrichmentplants at its smelter in Columbus, Montana. Granulate mattewith a 2% PGM content is delivered for further processingto Stillwater's refinery located near the smelter where thePGM content is upgraded to 55%-60%.Stillwater has outsourced the precious metal refining of thePGM filter cake produced by Stillwater to independent preciousmetal refineries in New Jersey and California, USA.Energy streamUntil the 4th quarter of 2005, most of the power supplied tothe Taimyr Peninsula (60% of electricity and 100% of heat)was produced by Norilskenergo, a division of MMC NorilskNickel, which operated three thermal/power plants. The other40% of electricity power was supplied by OJSCTaimyrenergo, an entity wholly-owned by RAO Unified EnergySystems (RAO UES).In line with the Group's strategy to create an independent powersupply system for its operations in the Taimyr Peninsula, sincethe 4th quarter of 2005 all power and heat supplied to theTaimyr Peninsula has been generated by OJSC Norilsk TaimyrEnergy Company ("NTEC") incorporated by MMC NorilskNickel (51% ownership) jointly with RAO UES of Russia (49%ownership). NTEC will operate all power assets owned byNorilskenergo, a division of MMC Norilsk Nickel and OJSCTaimyrenergo, for 10 years under a lease arrangement. The Taimyr Peninsula receives gas to support its operationsfrom OJSC Norilskgasprom and OJSC Taimyrgas, subsidiariesof the Group, which develop the Pelyatka gas condensatedeposit. The construction of start-up capacities at the Pelyatkadeposit is now complete, with 14 wells already drilled andanother 2 expected to be drilled in 2006.The Group conducts geological exploration in the Taimyr andKola Peninsulas and in the Krasnoyarsk and Tambov regionswith the goal of developing and enhancing its own mineralresource base. The Group has 12 licenses for geological andgeodesic exploration of subsurface resources in these regions. In January 2006, the Group signed an agreement with Rio Tintoto establish a joint venture ("JV") to explore and prospect forbase metals in South Eastern Siberia and in the Far East districts.Under this agreement, the Group will own 51% of shares inthe JV, while Rio Tinto will hold the other 49%.8
