<strong>Graduate</strong> Catalog: Section 7.1http://graduate.ua.edu/catalog/17200.htmlTHE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA GRADUATE CATALOGTable <strong>of</strong> Contents > Manderson <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Business7.1 GRADUATE PROGRAMS<strong>The</strong> Manderson <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Business is the graduate division <strong>of</strong> the Culverhouse College <strong>of</strong> Commerce andBusiness Administration. <strong>The</strong> mission <strong>of</strong> the College is to excel in the creation, dissemination, and application <strong>of</strong>business knowledge. <strong>The</strong> faculty <strong>of</strong> the Manderson <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Business <strong>of</strong>fers six graduate degrees: themaster <strong>of</strong> business administration (M.B.A.), master <strong>of</strong> accountancy (M.Acc.), master <strong>of</strong> tax accounting (M.T.A.),master <strong>of</strong> arts (M.A.), master <strong>of</strong> science (M.S.), and doctor <strong>of</strong> philosophy (Ph.D.).<strong>The</strong> masters’ degrees may serve as terminal pr<strong>of</strong>essional degrees; that is, they are designed primarily for people whoplan pr<strong>of</strong>essional careers in business, government, or nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organizations. <strong>The</strong>y may also function as preparatoryprograms for doctoral-level work.<strong>The</strong> doctor <strong>of</strong> philosophy program prepares graduates for careers as college or university pr<strong>of</strong>essors or aspr<strong>of</strong>essional researchers. <strong>The</strong> Ph.D. requires an extensive, in-depth knowledge <strong>of</strong> the major field <strong>of</strong> study, asupporting minor field <strong>of</strong> study, and a specialized knowledge <strong>of</strong> statistical and quantitative techniques necessary forthe advancement <strong>of</strong> knowledge in business and economics. A doctoral dissertation is required.An applicant for graduate study must meet both the general requirements <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong><strong>School</strong> and the standards set by the program to which the student is seeking admission. Successful applicants areadmitted to a specific program <strong>of</strong> study as stated on the application. A student who wishes to pursue a new degree orchange the major field <strong>of</strong> study is required to submit a new application.<strong>Graduate</strong> students in business are expected to exhibit a high level <strong>of</strong> integrity and pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism in all aspects <strong>of</strong>their programs, including relationships with other students and faculty.
