<strong>Graduate</strong> Catalog: Section 10.10http://graduate.ua.edu/catalog/23000.htmlTHE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA GRADUATE CATALOGTable <strong>of</strong> Contents > College <strong>of</strong> Education10.10 DEPARTMENT OF KINESIOLOGY (HPE)Department Head: Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Matthew Curtner-Smith, Office: 106 Moore Hall<strong>The</strong> master <strong>of</strong> arts degree in Human Performance studies is <strong>of</strong>fered with these specializations: sport management,exercise science, human performance, and sport pedagogy. <strong>The</strong> latter three programs are available under Plan I(thesis) and Plan II (nonthesis). <strong>The</strong> sport management program involves completing a “capstone experience”project. <strong>The</strong>re is also an alternative master’s program in sport pedagogy which leads to Class A certification for thosewith an undergraduate degree in a non-teaching field. <strong>The</strong> degree with an emphasis in sport pedagogy leads to ClassA certification, unless the student prefers a nonteaching degree. Programs leading to the doctor <strong>of</strong> philosophy (Ph.D.)degree in human performance with emphases in sport pedagogy and exercise science are also <strong>of</strong>fered.Admission and degree requirements for the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> and for the College <strong>of</strong> Education are detailed in anearlier section <strong>of</strong> this catalog. <strong>The</strong>re are no degree requirements specific to the department in addition to those <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> and College.Course DescriptionsHPE 500 Sociology <strong>of</strong> Sport. Three hours.Examines the institution <strong>of</strong> sport from a sociological perspective. Provides an opportunity to critically analyze theassumptions surrounding the social significance <strong>of</strong> sport through a process <strong>of</strong> reflective thought.HPE 502 Current Research in Physical Education. Three hours.A broad review <strong>of</strong> current published research in physical education, with emphasis on practical application <strong>of</strong> researchfindings.HPE 506 Techniques <strong>of</strong> Research. Three hours.Designed to acquaint the student with the types <strong>of</strong> research and the methods and materials necessary for scientificinquiry. Includes the development <strong>of</strong> a research proposal, with emphasis on form and style.HPE 507 Laboratory Techniques. Three hours.<strong>The</strong>oretical and practical understanding <strong>of</strong> physiological instrumentation and measurement in physical education,including practical laboratory experiences, as preparation for graduate research or other research opportunities.HPE 508 Perceptual-Motor Development. Three hours.Perceptual-motor development <strong>of</strong> infants and young children. Current philosophies, theories, and methods;laboratory work in movement exploration. A clinical experience is required.HPE 510 Teaching and Supervising Elementary <strong>School</strong> Physical Education. Three hours.Open to elementary education and physical education majors. Reviews the essential concepts for successfullyteaching grades 1–6; learning, function, and duties <strong>of</strong> consultant.HPE 512 Physical Education Curriculum. Three hours.Program content and curriculum planning in grades 1–12 and higher education; includes developing curriculum planapplicable to one's need.HPE 538 Advanced Adapted Physical Education. Three hours.Pertinent information concerning legislation, mainstreaming, the physical education IEP, and movement problems <strong>of</strong>individuals who deviate from the norm. A clinical experience is required.
