<strong>Graduate</strong> Catalog: Section 3.15http://graduate.ua.edu/catalog/13200.htmlTHE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA GRADUATE CATALOGTable <strong>of</strong> Contents > General Information3.15 CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING<strong>The</strong> Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is an integral part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>'s plan for academic excellence. <strong>The</strong>mission <strong>of</strong> the CTL is to enhance learning through the design and delivery <strong>of</strong> academic support services. CTL servicesare designed to help students upgrade study strategies and reading pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies, succeed in specific <strong>University</strong>courses—especially quantitative ones—and compete successfully for admission to graduate and pr<strong>of</strong>essional schools.<strong>The</strong> CTL maintains a dual service orientation through the provision <strong>of</strong> opportunities to advance learning strategies foracademically gifted students and to enhance learning strategies for students who need to strengthen their academicskills.Academic support programs are <strong>of</strong>fered through individual tutoring and consultation, a multimedia resource center,curricular courses, structured review programs, supplemental instruction, and informal help sessions. <strong>The</strong> CTL alsoserves the entire <strong>University</strong> community through its educational programming on CTL-TV, a closed-circuit broadcastavailable 24 hours a day on campus channel 75. Two TRIO programs funded through the U.S. Department <strong>of</strong>Education also operate in the CTL. Student Support Services provides academic assistance and counseling to 200first-generation, income-eligible, and disabled students. <strong>The</strong> Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate AchievementProgram prepares first-generation and traditionally underrepresented students for successful entry into andcompletion <strong>of</strong> doctoral degree programs. Student involvement in these units is criterion-based. GEAR UP is an earlyacademic intervention partnership program designed to help students improve academic performance, decreaseschool attrition, increase high-school graduation rates, and increase enrollment in postsecondary education. JUMP(Juvenile Mentoring Program), funded through the Office <strong>of</strong> Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, is the mostrecent program addition in the Center for Teaching and Learning.
