COLLEGE OF COMMUNITY HEALTH SCIENCES<strong>The</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Community Health Sciences (CCHS) is committed to the education <strong>of</strong> students in the health sciences.CCHS provides the last two years <strong>of</strong> clinical training for a portion <strong>of</strong> the medical students enrolled at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medicine, and it operates a three-year family practice residency program.CCHS welcomes students from disciplines other than medicine. A variety <strong>of</strong> graduate-level courses are <strong>of</strong>fered, as areinternship and research opportunities for students in nursing, health care management, nutrition, psychology,education, social work, and other disciplines.9.1 Admission Requirements<strong>The</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Community Health Sciences does not <strong>of</strong>fer a degree, and students taking courses <strong>of</strong>fered by CCHS areenrolled in other <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> programs or the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medicine (medical students).Admission requirements for these programs are given elsewhere. For the most current information, contact theregistrar in the Dean's Office, College <strong>of</strong> Community Health Sciences, Box 870326, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0326 ;phone (205) 348-7707; e-mail pmurphy@cchs.ua.edu; or visit http://graduate.ua.edu/catalog/.<strong>Graduate</strong> minor in community health sciences. <strong>The</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> the graduate minor in community health sciences isto provide the student with an understanding <strong>of</strong> health and disease as processes influenced by a wide range <strong>of</strong>factors, from the molecular to the sociocultural. <strong>The</strong> minor emphasizes the concepts and tools <strong>of</strong> epidemiology,community and family medicine, and behavioral sciences. To obtain a graduate minor, the student must successfullycomplete 12 hours in community health sciences (CHS) courses. <strong>The</strong> following three courses are required:Required coursesSemester hoursCHS 520 Basic Epidemiology 3CHS 527 Health Policy and Planning 3CHS 610 Special Problems in Medical Behavioral Science 3In addition, students must take 3 credit hours <strong>of</strong> their choice from other graduate CHS <strong>of</strong>ferings.It is anticipated that the entering student will have a sufficient background in quantitative methods.
