Information on the LIS specializationwithin the college-wide doctor <strong>of</strong> philosophy degree program may be found in this Catalog under Communication &Information Sciences Doctoral Program. <strong>The</strong> mission and goals <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> pertain to each <strong>of</strong> these degreeprograms. However, the objectives <strong>of</strong> each program are specific for that program and more narrowly focused.Mission statement. <strong>The</strong> mission <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Library and Information Studies is to advance the theory, art, andpractice <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essions specializing in the use <strong>of</strong> information and the creation <strong>of</strong> information in recorded form.Goals:• Teaching. Provide students with the knowledge, skills, understanding, and diverse technologies to meet thechanging informational and cultural needs <strong>of</strong> diverse populations and organizations. Foster leadership skillsand abilities in all students, provide opportunities within the program for students with leadership potential toexercise their abilities, and encourage students as graduates to seek out and assume leadership roles.Improve and develop students' critical and conceptual thinking skills.• Research and creative activity. Augment and advance knowledge through basic research and improvepr<strong>of</strong>essional practice through systematic inquiry into its nature, standards, and principles.• Service. Apply the insights and knowledge gained through research and instruction in service to public- andprivate-sector organizations.Facilities. <strong>The</strong> <strong>School</strong> is located on the fifth floor <strong>of</strong> the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library. Two classrooms aredesigned for optimal use <strong>of</strong> multimedia and information technologies. Large monitors, capable <strong>of</strong> handling both digitaland analog signals, are connected to a workstation and the campuswide network. One classroom also serves as anode on a compressed digital audio/video/data network. Both proprietary and standards-based connectivity to othersites worldwide can be achieved utilizing bandwidths from 128 Kbs to 1.54 Mbs. <strong>The</strong> Media Preparation Laboratorycontains Macintosh workstations and multimedia workstations linked to the <strong>School</strong>'s LAN, scanners, and laserprinters. S<strong>of</strong>tware for creating multimedia presentations and for Web development is available on the workstations.<strong>The</strong> Information Processing Laboratory includes a number <strong>of</strong> workstations connected to the <strong>School</strong>'s LAN. Amodem server is available for dial-out capabilities. Students have access to a wide variety <strong>of</strong> electronic bibliographicdatabases in CD-ROM and online formats that are available to all stations via the network and Internet. Through thelab, regular instruction is provided to students in the use <strong>of</strong> the Internet, word processing, database applications,desktop publishing, and many other topics. <strong>The</strong> Media Preparation Laboratory contains state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art Macintosh andIBM workstations specifically for research in the areas <strong>of</strong> cataloging, graphics, and for the development <strong>of</strong> multimediapresentations, including the <strong>School</strong>'s website: www.slis.ua.edu. Peripheral equipment includes a CD-ROM writer, colorscanner, and video capture boards. Students can gain experience working in MS-DOS, Unix, and Macintosh platforms.A library reading room permits browsing in current periodicals and information files. This area contains a variety<strong>of</strong> workstations that provide access to contemporary-model electronic information systems. Conveniently located forrelaxation and refreshment is the student/faculty lounge. Offices, other laboratories, and the administrative suitecomplete the 13,000-square-foot complex.Academic Common Market (ACM). <strong>The</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Library and Information Studies participates in the ACM, anagreement among selected Southern states to share academic programs at in-state tuition rates. Residents <strong>of</strong> thestates <strong>of</strong> Arkansas, Delaware, Virginia, and West Virginia may make an ACM application to attend the M.L.I.S.program. If accepted, <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong> will pay the out-<strong>of</strong>-state portion <strong>of</strong> the student’s tuition. Residents<strong>of</strong> Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee may apply to the ACM to attend theM.F.A. in book arts program, also with UA’s paying the out-<strong>of</strong>-state portion <strong>of</strong> tuition.
