River Murray and Lower Lakes catchment risk assessment for water quality: Results and management options Nutrients Several horticultural areas in raw water supply zones (Waikerie, Cadell, Metello’s) were allocated a moderate nutrient risk. Nutrient inputs from several of the other larger horticultural areas, while not located in the raw water zones, are probably contributing to a higher overall risk of algal blooms in this area. Other moderate nutrient risks were recorded for Jaeschke and Cadell Training Centre lagoons, the river vessel disposal station in Waikerie, septic tanks in Blanchetown township and Cadell and Waikerie riverfront locations. Stormwater discharge from the McCutcheon Street catchment in Waikerie was classified as a low pathogen risk. Organic matter Moderate organic matter risks were attributed to several horticultural areas in raw water supply zones (Waikerie, Cadell, Metello’s). Other sources and risk levels were similar to those described for nutrients above. Hydrocarbons and heavy metals Hydrocarbon and heavy metal risks were all assessed as low. Hydrocarbon risks to raw water supplies were due to accidental spillage from recreational craft, petrol station spillage and leakage, ferry runoff and tank spillage, and a stormwater discharge. Heavy metal risks to raw water supplies came from ferry runoff and the urban stormwater discharge in Waikerie. Salinity Several horticultural areas in this study’s raw water supply zones (Waikerie, Cadell, Metello’s) were rated as moderate salinity risks. As noted above, several salt interception programs have been implemented in the RW LAP area to reduce potential future salt impacts on the raw water supplies. Salt is expensive and difficult to remove in water treatment operations (eg desalination methods). 102
