Chapter 3: National Estimates of Delinquency Case ProcessingDispositions: Probation■■■■■Between 1985 and 2005, thenumber of cases adjudicated delinquentthat resulted in an order ofprobation increased 95%, comparedwith a 30% increase in the numberof cases that resulted in out-of-homeplacement.Nearly all of the growth in the numberof cases adjudicated delinquentthat resulted in probation took placebetween 1985 and 1997. During thatperiod, the number of cases adjudicatedand ordered to probation doubledand then changed little through2005.Since 1985, the largest percentincrease in the number of casesadjudicated delinquent that receivedprobation has been for drug offensecases (236%), followed by publicorder offenses (220%), personoffenses (203%), and propertyoffenses (15%).Between 1997 and 2005, the numberof adjudicated cases resulting in anorder of probation increased 23% forpublic order offense cases (from78,600 to 96,800), 14% for personoffense cases (from 84,800 to95,800), and 8% for drug offensecases (from 44,300 to 47,900).
