Chapter 3: National Estimates <strong>of</strong> Delinquency Case ProcessingDispositions: Probation■■■■■Between 1985 <strong>and</strong> 2005, thenumber <strong>of</strong> cases adjudicated delinquentthat resulted in an order <strong>of</strong>probation increased 95%, comparedwith a 30% increase in the number<strong>of</strong> cases that resulted in out-<strong>of</strong>-homeplacement.Nearly all <strong>of</strong> the growth in the number<strong>of</strong> cases adjudicated delinquentthat resulted in probation took placebetween 1985 <strong>and</strong> 1997. During thatperiod, the number <strong>of</strong> cases adjudicated<strong>and</strong> ordered to probation doubled<strong>and</strong> then changed little through<strong>2005.</strong>Since 1985, the largest percentincrease in the number <strong>of</strong> casesadjudicated delinquent that receivedprobation has been for drug <strong>of</strong>fensecases (236%), followed by publicorder <strong>of</strong>fenses (220%), person<strong>of</strong>fenses (203%), <strong>and</strong> property<strong>of</strong>fenses (15%).Between 1997 <strong>and</strong> 2005, the number<strong>of</strong> adjudicated cases resulting in anorder <strong>of</strong> probation increased 23% forpublic order <strong>of</strong>fense cases (from78,600 to 96,800), 14% for person<strong>of</strong>fense cases (from 84,800 to95,800), <strong>and</strong> 8% for drug <strong>of</strong>fensecases (from 44,300 to 47,900).
