Chapter 4: National Estimates of Petitioned Status Offense CasesAge at Referral■■■In 2005, the petitioned status offensecase rate for 16-year-olds was morethan one and one-half times the ratefor 14-year-olds, and the rate for 14-year-olds was nearly 4 times the ratefor 12-year-olds.The largest increase in case ratesbetween age 13 and age 17 was forliquor law violations. The case ratefor 17-year-old juveniles (3.8) wasabout 20 times the rate for 13-yearolds(0.2).Curfew and liquor law violation ratesincreased continuously with the ageof the juvenile. The largest relativeincrease during this period involved 16-year-olds (91%) and17-year-olds (84%).Case rates for petitioned curfew cases peaked in 1998 for16-year-olds and 17-year-olds and then decreased through2005.For all age groups, case rates for petitioned ungovernabilitycases were higher in 2005 than in 1995.Case rates for petitioned liquor law violation cases peakedin 1998 for youth age 17 and declined 33% by 2005.*Because of the relatively low volume of cases involving youth ages 10–12 for runaway, curfew, and liquor law violations, their case ratesare inflated by a factor specified in the graph to display the trend over time.Juvenile Court Statistics 2005 75
