The major change in the revised standard for the classification of federal dataon race and ethnicity is that now respondents are able to report more than one race by choosingmultiple responses to the following questions.2. Ethnicity: u.s. university libraries, only, should indicate Hispanic or Latino ethnicity by coding 1 toindicate the presence of the characteristic (1 =yes) and 0 to indicate its absence. The definition ofHispanic or Latino ethnicity is: A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or CentralAmerican, 01' other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race.3. Race: U.S. university libraries, only, should indicate race by choosing one or more responses amongthe five racial categories provided here. The definitions of the five racial categories are:American Indian or Alaska Native (AllAN). A person having origins in any of the original peoplesof North and South America (including Central America), and who maintains tribal affiliation orcommunity attachment.Asian. A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, 01' theIndian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia,Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam.Black or Mrican American. A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa.Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander (NHjOPI). A person having origins in any of theoriginal peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, 01' other Pacific Islands.White.
