Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: An Under Recognized Cause of Behavioral Problems

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an under recognized disorder in both the general population and in people
with intellectual disabilities. PTSD is a severe anxiety disorder that is caused by experiencing a real or threatened
traumatic event. Symptoms include those related to re-experiencing the event (nightmares/flashbacks), hyper arousal,
and avoidance. These symptoms can be presented and observed in a number of ways including sleep disturbances,
impulsivity, agitation and self-destructive behaviors. Diagnosing PTSD in people with intellectual disabilities is very
challenging. However, when recognized, following newer pharmacological treatment can result in dramatic behavioral
improvement. This session will include case presentations, review of the diagnostic criteria and the treatment strategy.

and offers the healthcare professional guidelines for structuring best clinical practices in determining a successful
