Managing Food Allergies, Intolerances and Preferences<br />

More facilities are admitting residents with food allergies. Are they truly allergies, however? This session discusses the<br />

difference between a food allergy, food intolerance and food preference. If it is an allergy, very strict precautions must be<br />

taken to keep the person safe. If it is not an allergy, the diet will become unnecessarily restrictive by following procedures<br />

for allergies. How to manage allergies and how to keep food safe, including avoiding cross-contact, will be discussed.<br />

Working in long term care today is extremely stressful for all staff. In addition, almost every employee brings major<br />

stress from home and personal lives. This session will help us to identify the major stressors in our lives and what the<br />

activity staff can do to assist in lowering both work and personal stressors.<br />

This session focuses on how to deal with the multitude of potentially difficult situations in the day-to-day relationships<br />

of a healthcare organization. The participants in this session will learn specific techniques to demonstrate appropriate<br />

implementation for handling “tough” situations. It is designed to prepare the participants with appropriate “howto”<br />

information to develop assertive conflict management skills that can produce a successful interaction for the<br />

organization and, at the same time, for the individuals involved.<br />
