Third Wartime ElevenAfter a seven years' absence, Idaho's football Vandalsre-entered the Pacific Coast Conference as afull-fledged member during the 1942 season.Back in 1934 both the Vandals and Montana weresuspended from the conference, because their undermannedteams could not provide adequate competitionfor the larger coast universities. Since then bothhad been "king's-X" members, playing incompleteconference schedules. Betore the 1942 season wasunderway, however, the conference reluctantly votedfull membership to the Vandals and Grizzlies.Their return to the conference, plus the fact theywere Idaho's third wartime eleven, gave double distinctionto the 1943 Vandals. Other wartime Idahogrid teams had played during the Spanish-AmericanWar and World War I.The Vandals of ' 42 played the same razzle-dazzlegame which their master coach, Francis Schmidt,introduced to the Gem State in 1941. Thirteen lettermenformed the backbone of the club, which lackedreserve strength. The remainder of the squad wascomposed of sophomore and transfer talent.Returni~g lettermen included Don Anderson, t;Veto Berllus, e; Earl Chandler, hb; Henry Crowley,c; Dan Davidoff, qb; Ray Davis, hb; Pete Hecomovich,qb; Irv Konopka, t; Dean Lewis, g; Joe Malta,fb; Howard Manson, hb; Jack Tewhey, e; and BobVonderhaar, hb.Honorarg Co-CaptainsAt the end of their ten-game season, which yieldedonly three victories, the Vandals chose Irv Konopka,a tackle, and Dean Lewis, a guard, as their honoraryco-captains.Both Lewis and Konopka were chosen on severalall-opponent teams during the year.
