Vandals Bring Stein HomeV aTO BERL L Us (E)B o o V oNDERHAA R (HB)Biggest football day of the year for the Idaho Vandals was October 31,the day they whipped Montana 21 to 0 and moved out of the conferencecellar. The game was played at Missoula, and when the Vandals camehome they brought the "Little Brown Stein," symbol of football superioritybetween the two neighbor-state universities. The Stein had been inMontana's possession since 1939.Although the weather was wet and the ball slippery, Idaho used itspassing attack to score all three touchdowns against the Montanans. Thefirst tally was an aerial from Ray Davis to Pete H ecomovich. The secondwas another Davis pass, this time to Merlin Aldred. Manson threw toJohnny Evans for the third. After each Chuck Plastino booted the extrapoint. Montana made two scoring drives during the game, but wasstopped each time by stubborn Idaho defenders.Earl Chandler played outstanding on both the offensive and defensiveduring the game. He gained 87 yards from scrimmage in 14 trips withthe ball. Other Idaho ground gainers were: Manson 82 yards in 18 tries;Malta 50 in 10; and Johnny Evans 22 in one.Idaho t ried 13 passes during the afternoon. Six were completed fora gain of 68 yards. Montana threw 13, but completed only three, allfor short gains.Jinx Sticks; W.S.C. Wins 7-0A jinx, which is almost to die of old age, celebrated its seventeenthbirthday in Neale stadium November 14, as Washington State College'sCougars slipped over a lont> touchdown to edge the Idaho Vandals 7 to 0.Idaho, playing its best football of the season, threw a scare into theCougars, but couldn't back up its threat ""ith the necessary points.Washington State scored three minutes after the second half opened,with Bob Kennedy lunging over from the two-foot mark for the score.The touchdown was set up the play before when Kennedy dropped backto pass on the 32 and found his receivers all covered by Vandal defenders.His only alternative was to run, and he ""eaved to the two-foot linebefore being forced out of bounds.In the third period Idaho drove to the W.S.C. 12-yard line, startingwhen Dean Lewis intercepted a Cougar pass on the Idaho 40. Three longruns by Earl Chandler, Joe Malta, and Ray Davis sparked the drive.After reaching the 12-yard line, Idaho tried a lateral play which carriedthe ball to the Cougar one-yard mark. The play was called back, however,when officials ruled that the lateral was illegally thro""n forwardIdaho fans question the decision. At this point, the Idaho offensivebogged do\\-n.Idaho tried desperately to pass for a touchdown in the waning minutesof play, but couldn't connect.
