HANK CROWLEY ( C)RAY DAVIS (HB)Rally Beats Portland 21-14After losing to Washington State in their last home game, the Vandalspacked their football togs and headed south for a three weeks' trip thattook them to Boise, Salt Lake City, and Los Angeles. Their first stopwas in <strong>Idaho</strong>'s capital city, where they whipped a scrappy little Portland<strong>University</strong> eleven 21 to 14.For three quarters against the Portlanders, it looked as if <strong>Idaho</strong> wasgoing to make another "X" in the defeat column, but in the fourthquarter the sluggish Vandals roared out with an attack which awed fanswho had jammed into Public School field. With the score 14 to 0 againstthem, the Vandals opened up a combined ground and aerial <strong>of</strong>fensivewhich netted three touchdowns in a span <strong>of</strong> 12 minutes.<strong>Idaho</strong> scored first a few minutes after the final canto opened. EarlChandler carried the ball into pay dirt on a line plunge, after aerials hadput the ball within scoring range. Dale Dykman scored the next touchdowna few minutes later on a short end-around, and he lateraled toManson for the winning touchdown near the end ot the quarter. ChuckPlastino deftly booted all three points after touchdown.Outstanding in the <strong>Idaho</strong> lineup during the game was Dykman, whoran the Portlanders dizzy during the final period with several long runs.Utah Wins 13 -7 at Salt LakeDoN B1RC HMIER (T)]OHN TOMIC H (C)From Boise the Vandals moved into Salt Lake City, where they droppeda Thanksgiving Day classic to the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Utah Redskins bya 13 to 7 score.<strong>Idaho</strong>'s lone touchdown came late in the fourth quarter, when theVandals' awry passing game belatedly began to move. Taking the ballon their own goal line, <strong>Idaho</strong> started to pitch passes, and with Mansonon the heaving end completed four consecutive aerials, three <strong>of</strong> them toVeto Berllus. A couple <strong>of</strong> plays later Manson threw to Berllus again,and the play was ruled complete on the I 0-yard line when Utah's WallyKelly interfered with the big <strong>Idaho</strong> receiver.At this stage <strong>of</strong> the game the Vandals switched tactics. A reverse toManson, who squirmed across on a cutback from the I 0-yard line, broughtthe <strong>Idaho</strong> touchdown. Chuck Plastino booted the point, and after that<strong>Idaho</strong> never found another chance. The Vandals were passing desperatelyfor a winning touchdown, when the final gun sounded.Utah's Frank Nelson scored first one second before the second quarterended, going nearly the length <strong>of</strong> the field on a "convoy" pass play. Andthe Utes garnered the winning touchdown the first time they went onthe <strong>of</strong>fensive in the second half. Utah dominated play throughout thegame with a pile-driving ground attack and unerring passing.Standout for <strong>Idaho</strong> against the Utes was Dean Lewis, right guard.244
