We have but a few medicines thatwill do that. There is something singular about this. Why does Calcarea favor the resorption of thatfluid and encourage the part to become calcareous It is more than I am able to explain, but it does itwhen the symptoms agree. But Sulf. and Sil., when their symptoms agree hasten suppuration. ButCalcarea has that peculiar action of concentrating and contracting. One may be indicated in one case,the other may be indicated in the other. There are times when Sil. is indicated and the abscess is in sucha dangerous place that if Sil. is given the result that naturally belongs to the spreading of that abscess isdangerous; in such an instance the surgeon must be called to drain the abscess in a safe manner, evenwhen we know that if that abscess were located in a safe place, it would be far better for that patient tohave the remedy he needs. Sometimes the periosteum is injured by a hammer striking it throughmuscles, injuring or contusing the periosteum. Inflammation will set in, pus will form rapidly, and ifCalcarea is indicated by the constitution of the patient the surgeon's knife is entirely useless, and a mostdetrimental thing.
