This is not a comprehensive document of all the progress made to date by thevendor community, but is representative of some of the activities at leading members of the <strong>UMTS</strong>-HSPA<strong>and</strong> LTE ecosystem.Alcatel-Lucent is a major player in the WCDMA-HSPA market, with one of the industry’s mostcomprehensive WCDMA-HSPA portfolios that can support deployments covering all markets <strong>and</strong>frequency b<strong>and</strong>s (including AWS <strong>and</strong> 900 MHz spectrum b<strong>and</strong>s).Alcatel-Lucent currently has 57 WCDMA customer contracts with strong worldwide presence in the mostdynamic data markets including Korea (with SKT, KT), the U.S. (with AT&T), in Europe (with OrangeGroup, Vodafone Group, <strong>and</strong> the mobilkom group) –currently supporting 4 out of the 6 top operatorsworldwide. Leveraging Alcatel-Lucent’s strong presence in high-growth markets like Africa <strong>and</strong> Asia,Alcatel-Lucent is continuing to see strong market growth in the WCDMA business.Alcatel-Lucent is working closely with its customers to smoothly migrate their networks towards HSPA+.The company’s existing installed NodeB modules are already HSPA+ capable <strong>and</strong> the activation is doneon a software basis only. The solution offered by Alcatel-Lucent is part of its converged RAN strategy withbuilding blocks to evolve or renovate legacy networks towards LTE: Converged BTS with SoftwareDefined Radio (SDR) modules, Converged Controller, Converged O&M <strong>and</strong> tools, Converged intertechnologymobility features <strong>and</strong> Converged transport.Alcatel-Lucent is a tier one supplier of 3G femtocells, recently selected by Vodafone for its commercialfemto service rollout in the UK. The introduction of femtocells is an early step in the move toward smallcell architectures, which are expected to play a major role in the introduction of LTE networks.Alcatel-Lucent also is taking an early leadership position in the LTE market. The company is activelyengaged in the majority of LTE projects being pursued by operators around the globe including both lab<strong>and</strong> field trials with tier one operators in the <strong>Americas</strong> (Verizon Wireless), Europe (Telefónica, Orange),the Middle East (Etisalat) <strong>and</strong> Asia (NTT DoCoMo). Alcatel-Lucent has 16 active LTE trials underway,with many more planned to start in the first quarter of 2010.From a technology st<strong>and</strong>point, Alcatel-Lucent has among the industry’s most comprehensive end-to-endLTE offers, covering RAN, Evolved Packet Core (EPC), IMS <strong>and</strong> mobile backhaul. Alcatel-Lucent alsofounded <strong>and</strong> is a leading player in a new industry consortium, The ng Connect Program, which wasestablished in early 2009 as a multi-industry collaboration among leading network, device, application <strong>and</strong>content suppliers to develop pre-integrated examples of applications <strong>and</strong> services for 3G <strong>and</strong> <strong>4G</strong>/LTEnetworks.In terms of portfolio highlights:• Alcatel-Lucent was the first vendor to receive FCC certification for LTE base stations for the 700MHz spectrum b<strong>and</strong>, a key requirement for sales in the U.S. market.• Alcatel-Lucent also received a certification for its 800 MHz radio (European Digital Dividend) <strong>and</strong>2.6 GHz LTE BTS equipment, allowing for shipments in Europe.www.3G<strong>Americas</strong>.org February 2010 Page 117
