6.2.5.3 MBMS SPECIFIC REFERENCE POINTSM1. The reference point between MBMS GW and E-UTRAN/UTRAN for MBMS data delivery. IPMulticast is used on this interface to forward dataM3. The reference point for the control plane between MME and E-UTRANSm. Sm is the reference point for the control plane between MME and MBMS GWSn. The reference point between MBMS GW and SGSN for the control plane and for MBMS datadelivery. Point-to-point mode is used on this interface to forward data.SGi-mb. The reference point between BM-SC and MBMS GW function for MBMS data deliverySGmb. The reference point for the control plane between BM-SC and MBMS GW6.2.5.4 MBMS-RELATED FUNCTIONAL ENTITIESTo provide MBMS Bearer Services, existing functional entities (e.g. eNodeB/RNC andMME/SGSN), perform MBMS-related functions and procedures, of which some are specific toMBMS. An MBMS-specific functional entity, the Broadcast Multicast Service Center (BM-SC),supports various MBMS user-specific services such as provisioning and delivery. Another MBMSspecificfunctional entity, the MBMS GW, resides at the edge between the core network and theBM-SC.USER EQUIPMENT (UE)The UE supports functions for the activation/deactivation of MBMS Bearer Services. Once aparticular MBMS Bearer Service is activated, no further explicit user request is required to receiveMBMS data, although the user may be notified that data transfer is about to start. Dependingupon terminal capability, UEs may be able to store MBMS data for subsequent playback.E-UTRAN/UTRANE-UTRAN/UTRAN is responsible for efficiently delivering MBMS data to the designated MBMSservice area and has the capability of receiving IP Multicast distribution.MME/SGSNThe MBMS control plane function is supported by MME for E-UTRAN access and by SGSN forUTRAN access. MBMS-specific control plane functions include session control of MBMS bearersin the access network (e.g. Session Start, Session Stop) and transmission of session controlmessages toward multiple radio network nodes.www.3GAmericas.org February 2010 Page 64
