Fit of Column Compression Joints and Base PlatesLack of contact bearing not exceeding a gap of 1 16-in. (2 mm), regardless of the typeof splice used (partial-joint-penetration groove welded, or bolted), is permitted. Ifthe gap exceeds 1 16-in. (2 mm), but is less than 1 4-in. (6 mm), and if an engineeringinvestigation shows that sufficient contact area does not exist, the gap shall bepacked out with non-tapered steel shims. Shims need not be other than mild steel,regardless of the grade of the main material.5. Field WeldingShop paint on surfaces adjacent to joints to be field welded shall be wire brushed ifnecessary to assure weld quality.Field welding of attachments to installed embedments in contact with concreteshall be done in such a manner as to avoid excessive thermal expansion of theembedment which could result in spalling or cracking of the concrete or excessivestress in the embedment anchors.6. Field PaintingResponsibility for touch-up painting, cleaning, and field painting shall be allocatedin accordance with accepted local practices, and this allocation shall be set forthexplicitly in the design documents.7. Field ConnectionsAs erection progresses, the structure shall be securely bolted or welded to supportall dead, wind, and erection loads.M5. QUALITY CONTROLThe fabricator shall provide quality control procedures to the extent that the fabricatordeems necessary to assure that all work is performed in accordance with thisSpecification. In addition to the fabricator’s quality control procedures, materialand workmanship at all times may be subject to inspection by qualified inspectorsrepresenting the purchaser. If such inspection by representatives of the purchaserwill be required, it shall be so stated in the design documents.1. CooperationAs far as possible, all inspection by representatives of the purchaser shall be madeat the fabricator’s plant. The fabricator shall cooperate with the inspector, permittingaccess for inspection to all places where work is being done. The purchaser’sinspector shall schedule this work for minimum interruption to the work of thefabricator.2.
