48 SHEAR CONNECTORS [Sect. I5.nominal strength of one shear connector as determined from Section I5.3 or SectionI5.4.6. Shear Connector Placement and SpacingShear connectors required on each side of the point of maximum bending moment, positive or negative, shall be distributed uniformly between that point and the adjacentpoints of zero moment, unless otherwise specified. However, the number ofshear connectors placed between any concentrated load and the nearest point ofzero moment shall be sufficient to develop the maximum moment required at theconcentrated load point.Shear connectors shall have at least one in. (25 mm) of lateral concrete cover, except for connectors installed in the ribs of formed steel decks. The diameter ofstuds shall not be greater than 2.5 times the thickness of the flange to which they arewelded, unless located over the web. The minimum center-to-center spacing of studconnectors shall be six diameters along the longitudinal axis of the supporting compositebeam and four diameters transverse to the longitudinal axis of the supportingcomposite beam, except that within the ribs of formed steel decks oriented perpendicularto the steel beam the minimum center-to-center spacing shall be four diametersin any direction. The maximum center-to-center spacing of shear connectorsshall not exceed eight times the total slab thickness. Also see Section I3.5b.I6. SPECIAL CASESWhen composite construction does not conform to the requirements of Section I1through Section I5, the strength of shear connectors and details of constructionshall be established by a suitable test program.LRFD Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, December 27, 1999AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF STEEL CONSTRUCTION
