App. K3.] DESIGN FOR CYCLIC LOADING (FATIGUE) 125In transverse complete-joint-penetration T- and corner joints, a reinforcing filletweld, not less than 1 4 in. (6 mm) in size shall be added at re-entrant corners. The surface roughness of flame cut edges subject to significant cyclic tensile stressranges shall not exceed 1,000 µin. (25 µm), where ASME B46.1 is the referencestandard.Re-entrant corners at cuts, copes and weld access holes shall form a radius of notless than 3 8 in. (10 mm) by pre-drilling or sub-punching and reaming a hole, or bythermal cutting to form the radius of the cut. If the radius portion is formed by thermalcutting, the cut surface shall be ground to a bright metal surface. For transverse butt joints in regions of high tensile stress, run-off tabs shall be usedto provide for cascading the weld termination outside the finished joint. End damsshall not be used. Run-off tabs shall be removed and the end of the weld finishedflush with the edge of the member.See Section J2.2b Fillet Weld Terminations for requirements for end returns oncertain fillet welds subject to cyclic service loading.LRFD Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, December 27, 1999AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF STEEL CONSTRUCTION
