This hadeeth was narrated from Anas ibn Maalik by Qataadah and ‘Abdul-‘Azeezibn Suhayb. From Qataadah it was narrated by Shu‘bah and Sa‘eed and from‘Abdul-‘Azeez by Ismaa‘eel ibn ‘Ulayyah and ‘Abdul-Waarith. Following that, many others narrated it.Scholars did not produce any works dedicated to compiling ‘azeez narrationsprimarily because there was no significant benefit from such a compilation.C. Ghareeb (strange): A narration which has a single transmitter at any point inthe isnaad after the Companion - narrator. 22 Some scholars like Ibn Hajar used theterm fard as a synonym for ghareeb, while others considered them to be separateclassifications. In accordance with the position of occurrence of the single narrator, theghareeb is subdivided into two categories: Ghareeb Mutlaq and Ghareeb Nisbee.1. Ghareeb Mutlaq (Absolutely Single). This category is also known as FardMutlaq and it refers to a hadeeth in which the single narrator is at thebeginning of the sanad, that is, the hadeeth is narrated by a singleCompanion from the Prophet (r). An example of such a narration is thewell-known hadeeth of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab in which he quoted theMessenger of Allaah (r) as saying:إِنما ا ْلأَعمال ُ بِالنياتِ‏ ))“Indeed deeds are judged according to their intentions.” 232. Ghareeb Nisbee (Relatively Single). This category refers to a hadeeth whichhas a single narrator in the generations after the Companions. In otherwords, more than one Companion narrated it, but in a least one generation ofnarrators, it was related by a single narrator. An example of this type can beseen in the following narration:حدث َنا عبد الل َّهِ‏ بن يوسف أ َخبرنا مالِك عن ابنِ‏ شِهابٍ‏ عن أ َنسِ‏ بنِ‏ مالِكٍ‏ رضِي))21 Narrated by Anas ibn Maalik and collected in Sahih Al-Bukhaari, vol. 1, p. 20, no. 14 and SahihMuslim, vol. 1, p. 314, no. 71.22 Studies in Hadith Methodology, p. 43.23 Sahih Al-Bukhaari, vol. 1, p. 1, no. 1 and Sahih Muslim, vol. 3, p. 1056, no. 4692.
