Zamakhasharee and ash-Shawkaanee.LiteratureA number of scholars have made compilations exclusively on fabricatedtraditions. Among them are, al-Mawdoo‘aat by Ibn al-Jawzee, which was theearliest work, al-La’aali al-Masnoo‘ah fee al-Ahaadeeth by as-Suyootee and al-Fawaa’id al-Majmoo‘ah fee al-Ahaadeeth al-Mawdoo‘ah by ash-Shawkaanee.And most recently Silsilah al-Ahaadeeth ad-Da‘eefah wal-Mawdoo‘ah byNaasirud-deen al-Albaanee.Matrook (Discarded)When a narrator is suspected of forgery, the sanad of the hadeeth in which he ismentioned is graded as matrook. Linguistically, the term matrook is the passiveparticiple of the verb ترك taraka (to leave; abandon; discard). Arabs traditionallyreferred to the broken egg-shell left behind by the newly emerged chick as thetarikah and this term is also used for the inheritance left behind by the deceased.Al-Bayqoonee defined the hadeeth matrook as follows:متروك ُه ما واحِد بِهِ‏ انف َرد *وأ َجمعوا لِضعفِهِ‏ ف َهو ك َردIts discarded (matrook) is what a single person alone narrated * and they areagreed on his weakness so it is karadd.Thus, the matrook is a strange narration related by a single weak narratorwhose weakness is due to his being accused of lying in his narrations or due to hissinful statements or actions.IdentificationThe hadeeth which is matrook may be known if any of the following twoconditions exist:1. The narration clearly contradicts universally accepted principles amongMuslims and its only chain of narration has in it a suspected forger.2.
