APPendixAppendix 3:Occupational Health<strong>and</strong> SafetyAchievementsThe <strong>Department</strong> has continued to improve OccupationalHealth <strong>and</strong> Safety performance through its corporatestrategy titled Safe Working <strong>and</strong> Learning 2009-2012.Achievements to date include:■■■■■■■■■■■■■■22% reduction ($37.8 million) in the workerscompensation premium4% reduction in the number <strong>of</strong> workplace injuries, withthe number <strong>of</strong> psychological injuries reducing by 14%12% reduction in the average duration <strong>of</strong> absenteeismdue to workplace injuries12% reduction in the average cost per claimsuccessful collaboration with <strong>NSW</strong> Health to supportan inter-agency response to the human swine influenzaoutbreak during the various phases under the statep<strong>and</strong>emic planproviding Occupational Health <strong>and</strong> Safety consultationtraining to more than 1100 committee members<strong>and</strong> representativesendorsement <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong>’s new strategy, SafeWorking <strong>and</strong> Learning 2009-2012.Strategies <strong>and</strong> programsTo improve safety performance the <strong>Department</strong> developeda range <strong>of</strong> strategies <strong>and</strong> programs which included:■■■■■■■■the development <strong>of</strong> an online system for lodgement <strong>of</strong>emergency management plans, to enable coordinatedsupport for workplaces during incident responsecommencement <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> an electroniccase management system to support improved safety<strong>and</strong> injury management service deliverythe continued delivery <strong>of</strong> a psychological injury earlyintervention program which has resulted in a 14%reduction in the number <strong>of</strong> injuries reported <strong>and</strong> a 19%reduction in the amount <strong>of</strong> time required away fromwork following injurythe implementation <strong>of</strong> the Occupational Health <strong>and</strong>Safety Management program which includes a schoolaudit component. The program provides a frameworkfor schools to plan <strong>and</strong> review safety systems in theworkplace ensuring continuous improvement.Challenges <strong>and</strong> future directionsThe <strong>Department</strong> is committed to implementing thedirections <strong>of</strong> the <strong>NSW</strong> Government’s Working Together:Public Sector OHS <strong>and</strong> Injury Management ImprovementStrategy which is expected to be released in early 2010 <strong>and</strong>will strive to achieve the targets set out under this strategytogether with those within the <strong>Department</strong>’s Safe Working<strong>and</strong> Learning 2009-2012 strategy.In early 2010, the <strong>Department</strong> will commence operation<strong>of</strong> the electronic Safety <strong>and</strong> Injury Management casemanagement system. The system will ensure longterm sustainable improvements to the way in whichoccupational health <strong>and</strong> safety is managed <strong>and</strong> will reducethe cost <strong>of</strong> workers compensation within the <strong>Department</strong>through better case management resulting in improvedreturn to work outcomes.88 APPENDICES
